Virgin Mobile

I have the $35 plan with the HTC One V. The service and reception are fine, but I'm in the "ready to smash it" category with my phone as well. It's just time for an upgrade. The GS3s are currently on sale at 25% off (still $299), so I'm really considering it. A few of my friends have those phones (with different carriers) and love them.

I upgraded to the Galaxy and I promise you it's worth the money. 100x better than the One V. So much faster!

I have the One V and I am also ready to smash it into the wall...I will more than likely upgrade around the holidays

I currently have Verizon on a contract. My contract is up in Oct. and I want to switch to a non-contract phone with an upgrade to a smart phone. When we moved here in 2006 I had Sprint but my cell phone didn't get service in my basement, where I spend a lot of time. I am considering going with Virgin Mobile and getting the iPhone but my concern is that Sprint hasn't upgraded their coverage. Does anyone know if they are better than they were in 2006?

What is a top up card? Do you need one on top of the monthly fee?

It's going to depend entirely on your area and if they've installed or upgraded towers near you. I've had VM for four years now, and the coverage still stinks. When my phone finally dies, I'm changing to something else.

See if you can find somebody near you who has Sprint or VM and borrow their phone to check out your basement.

If you are happy with Verizon coverage I would check out Page Plus. They use the Verizon network and you can purchase a phine directly through them or use a Verizon phone. Officially they do not support the iPhone but if you research them you will see that they do activate them and people do use them. You do not get 4G with PagePlus, something to consider if that is important to you.
We all switched from Verizon to PP and couldn't be happier.
You can also check out Straight Talk, they also use Verizon (but that depends on the area).

I second Page Plus! I have been with them for my DD's phone for years and they have been great to work with. They are fine in my area when my DD is out and about but Verizon sucks in our home so I can't activate my DD's new phone with them :(. The lack of service in the home is making her crazy.

Our coverage stinks in our house too and activation sometimes take several tries. You can go out of your neighborhood to do it :)
I am considering the iPhone for my dd because she uses her touch to imessage her friends at home because texting is iffy.
Sad thing is Verizon has the best coverage here, we don't get anything with anyone else.

No. A top up card is the "minute" card you can buy in store (I think you can get them online as well) that you use to add time to your phone. Or you can pay monthly using your credit card (either manually or automagically).

I go with the automagic option. :)

I concur with the above. One advantage to buying the top-up card is that you can get them at Target. They had them on sale for 10% off about two weeks ago so we stocked up and paid for 3 months in advance for each of us. I don't know if the Red Card works, but if so then you'd get additional savings.

Thank you. I went to Walmart today and looked in to Straight Talk. They seem to have a lot of good coverage in my area and I can get the iPhone on line. I was going to buy an iPad mini but I think I'll do this instead.

I think Straight Talk may have the same restrictions as PP when it comes to 4G. Be sure to keep that in mind when you buy your phone. Good luck!

Straight Talk is not exclusively any one carrier. It depends on the area and the phone you buy.

I just bought Straight Talk phones for dh and dd. Most of them were the dreaded Sprint, a few were AT&T. There were only a few that were Verizon, which is what I wanted.

Is there a way to tell which ones are on what network? I'm looking at an iphone but if it isn't run on Verizon's network I think it might be useless.
I would rather pay $35 for it on Virgin but if its guaranteed to work for me, $45 on straight talk isn't so bad.

A top up card also extends the service "life" of the existing minutes on your phone. Most PAYG phones have their minutes expire unless you top up with more minutes. One of the advantages for Page Plus is that minutes on top up cards last 120 days (and extend the existing minutes the same amount) while other companies are only good for 60-90 days. I can buy the biggest top up card (thereby reducing my per-minute cost) and not have to worry that it's going to expire before it's used up.

I went into the one Walmart that is somewhat better than most around here, found someone who seemed to have a clue and she was able to show me the phones that were Verizon. I was only interested in Android phones, so I don't know if there were any iPhones around here that were Verizon.

From what I've read, ST/Walmart is trying to push as many customers as possible to Sprint because it costs them less than AT&T or Verizon.
