No, that I can understand... I need about as much for 5 days or a week as I do for 3 weeks. Partly because I tend to wash the clothes in between, but mainly because you need all the toiletries, make-up, hair straighteners, most of the same shoes etc for a long weekend as you do for three weeks :confused3

"Infants not entitled to a seat are entitled to one piece of checked baggage weighing no more than 10 kg and with dimensions of 9 x 14 x 22 ins. They are also entitled to one piece of hand luggage weighing no more than 6kg. This is over and above the buggy or bassinet or car seat, which are carried free of charge."

Children with seats get the same allowance as adults

Thanks, so that's 56Kgs then, still pretty good. :thumbsup2

I know it is good, we have been used to 20 kg each so we won't have to worry about our cases this year at all. We always travel as light as possible.

:cool1:
But how would we carry it all? 5year old and 7 year old - so 4 x 2 x 23kg + 4x hand baggage..... Mind you for a 10 day trip it would be a bit of an overkill - though thinking about the way home........all that extra could be useful...:thumbsup2

How much are we allowed to bring back through customs without paying tax/duty? And if you buy clothing / trainers and use it out there, do they charge duty on your dirty laundry?

Cheers,
Tessa

We travel light out, with one case inside another case, they are always full on the return trip. :thumbsup2

yep, we are going to do this as well...need it for all of the scrapping stash!

yay:thumbsup2

you need a good sized car as well - we'll have 4 large cases plus 2 hand luggage (max size!) so good job there's just the 2 of us - no room for kids as well:lmao:

Wish I could afford to upgrade tho' and get more luggage allowance:sad1: as we'll have at least one case full of our 'wedding' gear for our vow renewal this year which obviously means less room to bring other goodies back. Might just have to dump some of our cheapie Asda T-shirts for the journey home (don't suppose they'd swap them for souvineers like they do in Africa:rotfl2:)

If you are flying with VA and happen to be over your allowance when coming home it will cost you US$115 per piece.

Claire ;)

I've ordered some of those travel scales to take with us so that doesn't happen. Anything over the 23kg will be tossed, but at least we'll be able to make that decision in our room rather than as a last minute panic at the airport.

 could you take an extra piece up to 23kg for that $115?????

thanks alot for that Obi - I've written it all down!!:thumbsup2

Last time we went out with one case each, but inside the case we had packed another case, and each still weighed in at between 11 - 13 kg. Came back much closer to the allowance.

You are able to bring back a 32kg bag for that.

But you can go over the 23kg and upto 32kg for $35 per piece!

As per VA website

Bookings made since the 1st April 2006 are subject to new free baggage allowances. Economy passengers travelling on flights to/from the USA, Caribbean, Bahamas, Cuba, Jamaica and Nigeria wishing to check in baggage weighing between 23kg and 32kg are subject to an excess charge of GBP20 / USD35 per piece for each flight taken. Additional pieces over your free allowance are charged at the normal rates.

Claire ;)

If you use DTD check in for your return flight I wouldn't worry too much. They don't weight the cases (they only have 1 scale) unless the guys loading the vans think they feel particularly heavy. There must've been 100 cases when we checked in at Christmas and they literally only weighed 1! which to be honest was so big I think I could've predicted it would be overweight :)

Thanks for the info. It's not that bad at all really - about £60 for a whole 32kg of EXTRA luggage:cloud9: Just think what I could get in there..........

Claire,
thats maybe not how I read it.
You have your allowance of 2 X 23 Kg. If one of those cases weighs between 23 & 32Kg you pay extra.
If you go over your allowance of 2 X 23Kg you pay excess baggage charges at the normal rate

Do you see what I am thinking? I cannot be sure that I am reading it correctly or not

Obi I must say it is confusing with all these different allowances, but the quote above about the new allowances is a direct copy off the VA website. Also in the past you have been able to pool allowances so if one bag is under and the other is over if both combined are less than the pooled allowance you didn't pay extra!

The way it seems to read is if you have your entitlement (2X23KG) and one bag is say 29KG and the other 17KG, you will pay an extra $35 for the case over 23KG??

Yes I guess you could read it that way, so best bet is if youa re going to go over the allowance make sure all suitcases are to their limit first!
