Hi

I have just prebooked my seats but was unable to book the extra legroom seats ie the bulkhead or exit seats. The woman on the phone said they cant prebook those seats, they have to be requested at check in. For the exit seats she wanted to charge me £50 per person. So my question is how do you get those seats. Twilight check in opens at 12 midday, so will I have to be there by then to stand any chance. Any helpful tips anyone.

Thanks

Pam

I would have suggested getting there as early as possible for the twilight check-in but even then it can't be guaranteed. We managed to get them once when we turned up early but this was before the days of twilight check-in!!

Also, I'm not sure whether they allocate the emergency exit seats at check in now or on boarding - I'm sure someone here will know. As for the £50 - I heard they don't charge that for flights to Orlando, but again not 100% sure.

we've found that you have to be one of the first few people at check in to get extra legroom. we've never been charged, however i think it's at the clerk's discretion. we did once have to sit apart from each other so that my boyfriend could get extra legroom, but it was a short flight so wasnt a problem.

we didnt have a problem getting extra legroom going out or coming back from dominican republic last year, but that was a smaller plane because of their tiny runway, so not sure about bigger flights. not very helpful really, sorry!

We were not charged for the emergency exit seats in September. We were quite early for twilight check in - smiled like a cheshire cat and chatted a lot to the check in staff and it seemed to work!!! :teeth:

We got them at the DTD check in. We were not the first, but the man checking us in did make a phone call. By the way we didn't ask for them, but asked if we could sit together as we were split a bit. We had three exit and 3 behind, our two children and myself sat behind with my DiL in front with DH. One note to remember about exit seats is the arms are thicker and less seat room and they do not more up. Also you will find people coming to look out of the window at the door. We also noticed a lot of people would stand there and chat. As it was a night time flight it was quite annoying. My DH stuck his legs out to discourage it!!

Hiya we got guaranteed the exit isle seats on virgin, main reason being i am classed as a giant (dont laugh ok! I am only 6ft, but i grow about a half inch a year) but I have the giantism gene. Apparently alot of the exit seats are saved for strange reasons like mine.

I must say its nice to know I get that seat though I hate the way people whisper about me, the flight attentdant explained to someone this year that i had the seats because i was a giant (lol) and the person said i wasnt that tall, so i had to show him my sos disk round my ankle to make him stop whining.

I think this is the first time I have admitted I have giantism, which is a break through, just dont think I am a freak

ha, you'll be lucky. international avaition laws staet that emergency exit seats can only be occupied 'by passengers fit and able to help in the event of an emergency' bulkhead seats will always be prioritised for passengers needing a sky cot and under 16's are no longer allowed in exit seats. instead virgin and ba can offer a premium seat upgrade for around £250 per person each way. if you ask last minute you may get these seats cheaper or if you're lucky a free upgrade. other than that get to check in as early as poss. twilight wont allocate exit seats either as they'll have to be done on the day of flying
good luck, it sure is worth a try

The problem is, even though it is a night time flight the airlines encorage people to get up and stand or walk about to avoid DVT and the windows are the only place to go so you cant really complain about it!

Its down to the CAA who say that the allocation agenst must check the ableness (if thats a word!) of the passenger taking the exit seats, so thats why you have to get those at the check in

Hi

I have already pre-booked my seats, but can I request bulk head seats using the on line check in? We are not staying at Gatwick the night before, so we can not use the twilight check in. We are travelling with 5 year old and twin boys of 23 months (which we have already paid seats for). If not it isnt a great loss, as we thought about the twins before we booked and decided to pay for a seat rather than have them on our laps for 9 hours, which I think is uncompletely uncomfortable for them.

Good for you, and I certainly, as would no one else here ever consider you a freak.

Not normally as they are reserved in economy for babies in bassinets, but worth a try

we have only been lucky once at twilight to get 1 extra legroom seat for DH (6'4") we flew PE this year, part of the reason is that DS is 6'3" at 13, and finds the seats uncomfortable, unfortunaly he is not allowed to sit in an extra legroom seat because of his age but that doesn't make it any less uncomfortable for him, we got the front 2 rows upstairs on both our flights this year and although only marginally more room than an ordinary row, because it was not an exit row DS could sit there.

I think we may request exit-row seats.

My BF is 6'4" (although he's never had a problem with normal economy seats), and we're both young and fit, so we're gonna see what we can do. If not, I may ask if there are any seats available in PE and pay for the upgrade.

The only thing is, we wouldn't want to get split up.. argh! Decisions, decisions!

The very first time that we flew to Orlando I decided to try to ask for an upgrade at check-in - the answer was a very polite 'no' but she did say that she would put us in bulkhead seats so we could have extra legroom. Very nice of her we thought. I tried the same tactic on the return trip but was told that bulkhead seats were reserved for people with babies.

Dpends on how they feel on the day, I think. And possibly how politely/pleasantly you ask.
