I can't believe I'm asking this - I'm looking at fares and my love for the national carrier has declined. The flying kangaroo just isn't worth another $2000+ for the three of us.

Code share Delta metal Syd --> LAX on a Virgin flight number & Virgin metal home (about $3700 for the 3 of us.) Virgin flight numbers all the way because the above sounds confusing.

Or, Virgin metal the whole way, about $4000.

Will I hate it and kick myself for not doing Virgin both ways? The seat width is the same as Virgin, pitch is 31-32", Virgin is 32", according to Delta there is inflight entertainment.

Just too hard!!!!

As a reference United is a tiny bit more than Virgin's sale so I'll rule them out for now. And Qantas forget it on price.

I love delta syd-lax.....aircraft clean, good IFE system, foods good and you can get upgraded on the way back if you volunteer to give up your seat and fly home a day later (sssshhhhhh..our little secret).....I would fly them again in a heart beat if the price was right..

also investicate there economy +.....more leg room, for a fraction of the price..

do it:thumbsup2

see if you can delta both ways

We've flown Delta SYD-LAX and to be honest the difference between them and Virgin is minimal. Virgins flight attendants might be more friendly but I'm asleep for most of the journey anyway! On demand entertainment is fine with a reasonable selection available. Food is nothing worse than other airlines. If it means you save money then go for it!

Karen just out of interest, when do you volunteer to fly the next day? At check in or before hand?

Thank you both - looks like we'll do it that way. There are still 9+ seats on the flight that we want in that price category, so I'm waiting on DH to confirm his annual leave today. Fingers crossed. It should be ok.

ok, check in as per usual
go to the gate
as soon as you see someone at the gate, go up and say you want to volunteer for Offloading/ giving up your seats..as long as you get
confirmed business class flight back,
$$$ voucher compensation,
hotel accom and
meal vouchers...they will,

if they are overbooked,
bump you to the next available flight Business class,
take your luggage off (hopefully) so have spare change of clothes in your carry on just in case they cant retrieve your bags..
Get them to show you the new booking on the next flight....sometimes they scam you into economy......

good luck:thumbsup2

I'm liking hearing the positive Delta experiences. I booked them without knowing much about them and got home and read US reviews... scary. But hey, they were really reasonable so I am not complaining!

we first flew them when they had $1200 flights to orlando.....so too a risk and glad we did..in the last 3 years we have been offloaded twice (business class lax-syd)...a free flight syd-lax using offload vouchers....hotel accom & now we are using our points to travel first class lax-mco only costing us $110 each.........so we are VERY happy with delta:thumbsup2

and the aircraft from syd is newish, great entertainment & food is ok as well....try to get econ +..for an extra $120 one way you get premium economy leg room, priority boarding etc..worth the $$$ for 13 +hrs of comfort..works out $10 an hour:banana:

We paid around the same price so we thought we'd jump on it. At that stage Qantas were charging $1800 return and since I'm still angry with them, it was going to be Virgin Australia or Air NZ.

I think Delta works out well though as we're flying out on a Virgin aircraft and back on Delta. We have a three hour layover in LAX so I'm hoping that's enough time.

3 hrs will be plenty.....just dont panic....there are other flights to get if you do miss that one, so just enjoy the experience...

delta have a 30 day $90 club lounge membership..nice for layovers
