Virgin: cheaper upgrade at check in?

Apologies as I know this is very likely to have been discussed before, but when I did a 'search' the screen goes blank. Maybe because I'm looking from work.

We, 2 adults 2 children, are off to LA in April At the moment, because we booked quite late, we are not all sitting together looking at the online reserve seating. I'm guessing if we arrive early enough at the airport, we should be able to check in and be allocated a row.

Ideally we would like PE upgrades, but realise to get 2 sets of 2 seats is unlikely, but just in case, any guess how much they would cost? I'm too mean to be spending £400 each which is the current price online.

Not all the seats are available for picking online, they keep them back for check in, I dont think you will have any problem with sitting together.

When I worked for Virgin the upgrades at the check were normally more expensive than doing it before but i have heard it varies
