I'm not sure how many people are aware of these, but these are a new thing for DLR to do. They're called Vinylmation toys, and they're basically little dolls that use a Mickey Mouse's shape as a blank canvas and artists add creative designs on them. Here's a link if you're curious: http://psc.disney.go.com/eventservices/disneygallery/dlr_vinylmation.html

I think it's pretty neat that DLR is coming out with these sort of toys (and pins, for that matter). They're sort of competing with other companies that make similar toys and are targeted towards the youthful group (like these Munny toys from Kidrobot: http://www.kidrobot.com/2008/munny/)

They were released on Dec 2008 and when I went to look for them last night in the park a CM said they were already sold out until the end of January :(. SO MUCH HYPE!!

Any thoughts about this new release? Which one is your favorite?

I started buying the pins during our Halloween trip. I think that they are very cute! I have bought 3 sets so far and received 5 different pins. I will probably buy at least one set during my March trip, assuming that I can find them!

I also saw the figures when we were there at Christmas (Dec. 20-25) and they appeared to just be sitting on the shelf at the big store in Tomorrowland. They are cute, but $10 each is more than I wanted to pay for a blind grab bag sort of thing. I would have definitely bought at least one or two if I could have chosen which ones I wanted. They do have some bigger ones that you can see what you are buying ahead of time, but they were $40 each! Yikes... too rich for my blood!

Oh, and my faves? Creepy Wallpaper (the HM mouse) and Kermit.

We got one of these as a gift from a fellow DISer on our cruise last month. I hadn't seen them before, but one of the CMs onboard was raving about how cool they are.

I'm with cheshiregirl, though - if I could pick out what I'm getting, I'd probably collect them all, but not if I was risking duplication for my ten-bucks.

I have never seen these. I checked out the links in OP. What am I missing? They look, hmm, creepy to me. Kermit looks odd. Figment (one of my fav. characters of all time) doesn't look, well, Figment-y, and I don't get the Mickey with polka-dots or stars all over him. I am not understanding something. Help me. LOL

Explain them again please? slowly... :rotfl:

Thanks,
Dreams

I :lovestruc Monorail and Yeti! I'm disappointed to hear that it's a grab bag type deal though. It's such a gamble. I'd rather just buy the ones I want on eBay.

I want the Yeti and the Kermit one! They're so dang cute!

But I didn't know it was a you don't know what you were getting type of deal... That kind of ruins it.

Dreams, I just saw them for the first time myself when I was at DLR a couple of weeks ago when we wandered through Off the Page in DCA, where a lot of them are sold - the large ones and the small ones. Then I saw only the small ones in some other store (can't recall which one). I definitely like the small ones better than the large ones, but I agree with you - there is something creepy about them overall! I thought the same thing!! In a weird, abstract way I suppose the little ones are kind of cute, but the big ones are definitely sinister!!

those are so cute. i like the 2nd link ones! i wish they weren't vinyl, though. vinyl skeeves me out a little too much to own it.

They are the equivalent of when a city does a public art project like the cows in Chicago or the guitars in Cleveland and each artist takes the same blank canvas (in this case a classic mickey mouse) and designs it in a way that reflects a different theme.

Each of the first 12 figures represents a different Disney theme, character or attraction... Kermit for the Muppets; Yeti for the Matterhorn; the one with stars is for the Sorcerer's Apprentice; the one with the dots is for the ELP; etc. The first edition also includes ones for: HM, the Teacups, a mickey shaped balloon, figment, a dragon, the monorail, an apple for snow white, and an upside down mickey.

The long and the short is that they are supposed to be artsy and not exact replicas of the characters and rides they represent. I think they are cute, but my DH thinks they are kinda creepy. So, I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

I saw them in Disneyana and I thought they were so cool! My fave is the HM one and I couldn't believe how expensive it is!!! The big HM one is more expensive than the other big Vinylmation figures bc it also comes w/ a small one. Why does Disney have to ruin my fun?!?
I would start collecting the pins, but knowing me, I'd probably get doubles and I never see any CMs w/ the Vinylmation pins.

So is anybody collecting them? Better yet, is anybody trading? I just saw these for the first time on Saturday. I was a collector of the Hasbro Theme Park Edition 1 - 7, and I just completed my 7 series. Thinking I was done, I saw these stupid things. Now I have two (the red and green one, and the blue and purple ice one). On weds, my birthday, I will be using my gift card to get a couple of more. But I have yet to see anybody who is collecting and trading. Let me know.

I am collecting them, but definitely not trading them ;) I can't wait to get the whole set. I think this series is fantastic. In fact, I'm kind of sad that they are not offering some of the pins that are well designed for the toys. Looks like I'm just gonna have to buy those toys! I especially like the IASW, Fireworks and HM one! Too cool ;)

I think they are weird but I'm thinking the kids will like them. lol You know, I'm going in like 2 weeks......want me to grab you a couple if they have them?

The little ones are kind of cute, but the big ones are ridiculously expensive for essentially rubber toys. I think the ones I saw were 75.00 ??? Really..it's just another thing to get people to buy imo. I never got into the pin thing and this certainly won't grab me either.

I have traded for two pins of these so far. I went ahead and splurged and bought a small one today and got the monorail mickey.

OOOO the monorail mickey. I sooo want that one. The ones that I don't have that I'm aiming for are the monorail, yeti, and teacup one! WOOO!

I love the HM and Kermit ones!!

But I have been tempted to get in on these since I saw what some of the artists were doing with them at Comic Con last year, they are a really cool idea!

I have to add I would love Disney to sell the blank mickey's to see what normal people might create!

I looked up HM vinylmation online because I wanted to see it for myself and I fell upon a kid robot forum with people who were working on a blank canvased ones. I think they do it, but I'm not sure where people can get 'em. :confused3

Its such a cool idea though :)

Being a student still, I don't have an office, but when it comes to it, I SOOO want to put these up there (even though there might be a chance that they will be stolen; maybe I'll keep 'em safe). It would be awesome to do graphic design and have these in front of me, just glowing in the corner of my eye ;)

Wazowskilover- Are you wanting to buy the blanks? Offline or online?

I am not sure where in California you are but I know that Munkey King in Hollywood has blanks and so do some other shops. They start at about $7 for a 3.5" and go up to almost $200 for some of the designs.
