Vinegar in the wash

Okay I have read about all the wonders of vinegar in the laundry and how it doesn't make the clothes like vinegar.

I just ran a load of towels through with vinegar because it seems like our washer has been stinking (front loader that the door isn't left open on as often as it should be). Well I went ahead and tossed the towels in the dryer but they smelled like vinegar to me.....does it go away once they are dry?

Nope, I just folded a load of towels that I used vinegar in the wash with. They just smell... clean.

I didn't have them smell like vinegar when i pulled them out of the wash. And my aunt has a sensitive nose and she didn't smell anything either before putting them in the dryer. This was for sheets though.

How much did you put in? I am doing wash right now with vinegar and just changed a load and didnt smell anything.

How much are you supposed to use, I'm getting ready to try my first load.

I would like to try this. I have a front load washer, so do I put the vinegar in where I would normally put my fabric softener? I also have a tub of Oxyclean, what section/compartment would that go in if I decide to use that for some of my clothes?
Thanks in advance for your replies.
Jenny

Because the washer was stinky I used more than I otherwise would have....but I used about a 1/4 cup in the wash cycle and then up to the full line in the rinse cycle. I just pulled them out of the dryer and there's a "slight" smell of vinegar, but not bad. And probably because I used so much. I will try it just in the rinse in another load and see how it goes. How much do you usually use in the rinse cycle?

I have a front loader so do I put the vinegar in where the soap is supposed to go or do I use soap and vinegar?

I use soap and vinegar. I put the vinegar in the fabric softener holder. I'll never use fs again after seeing how gunked it up it made the washer. yuck...

I've never noticed a vinegar smell?!!

I use 1 cup of vinegar to a load, I just add it to the basket and it works fine. I've never had anything smell like vinegar after the dry but yes, after a wash you might smell vinegar as you transfer the clothes to the dryer.
Has anyone line dried their clothes after using vinegar? I wonder how they would smell after that?

I have been very impressed with how nice and clean my towels have been coming out with vinegar. They are really sof too and no vinegar smell, I hate the smell of vinegar.

I've been thinking about doing this myself since, but as others have asked I have a front loader and I'm unsure where to put the vinegar.

I know that once the vinegar dries you won't smell it, I use a vinegar/water solution as my regular daily cleaner for my counters/tables and while you can smell it when it's wet as soon as you wipe the counter dry you can't smell the vinegar any more.

I only use the dryer in the winter.

I usually just put the vinegar in my fabric softener dispenser, but I'll usually dump some directly into the wash with the detergent for towels. Depending on how much I use, I'll smell the vinegar (faint or very strong) when pulling the wet clothes out but there is no vinegar smell once they dry.

I really noticed a difference with line drying and vinegar. Before the towels and jeans would be a bit stiff, but now everything comes off the line just like it would come out of the dryer. A few bottles of vinegar have saved me hundreds of dollars on propane without changing the softness of the clothes. :thumbsup2

I've been using vinegar in the wash and also keep a few spray bottles of vinegar and water around the house to wipe off counters, etc for a few years now. Within seconds (as soon as you wipe and it's dry) the vinegar smell is gone.

I can't believe it took me all these years and a discussion board to find out such a great hint and $$ saver. My towels are so much nicer to the touch. The very dirty work clothes of DH and DS are also much cleaner after I tried adding the vinegar to those hot water wash loads. It seems to help in cutting the grease of the machine oil. I also found that my washer itself seems very clean. What a great tip. I will never go back to slimey fabric softener. Oh, and I also like it in the dishwasher.

I just started using vinegar. I saw the other post and decided to try it. My washing machine doesn't have a fabric softner dispenser it has a bleach dispenser. I have been putting it in there.

My front loader has a very small area for softener so I've been putting vinager in that area as well as the bleach dispenser. I haven't noticed a big difference in softness which tells me that the $ I was spending on Downey was a waste. I also don't like the over powering smell of most softeners.

I've been having an issue with my line dry clothes smelling musty after they're dried. So, I tried using 1/4 vinegar in the bleach section of my top loader and the smell is gone. It's amazing how soft the clothes are too.
