Video tapes through security

Can video tapes or mini 8mm tapes be damaged by the machines in security?

If I pack them in my check in luggage will the machines they use there hurt them.

These are old family movies I want to share and some video of our Disney trip from last year, not blank tapes.

I would take them with me on the plane. I WOULD NOT put them in your suitcase if you ever want to see them again. They won't be hurt going through the x ray but do you want to risk the chance of losing them?

A few years ago we did a Dolphin swim and bought the VHS tape. They told us not to let it go through the xray scanner at the airport but rather just hand it to the security officer. We did just that and it worked fine.
