Video Editing Software suggestions for 14 year old?

I am absolutely at a loss as to what to get my son for his 14th bday next week, let alone for Christmas. He blurted something out about video editing software but then complained that his laptop probably wouldn't support it though. Can anyone suggest decent, fun software for a teen that isn't a fortune.

And do I really need to worry about compatibility that much? His laptop is not the best out there but it's only a year old.

TIA

I would just use MS Movie Maker. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-live/movie-maker It does a nice job and is free and his laptop should run it just fine. He just needs to watch his processor temperature when he renders. Most laptops have descent power but don't do a good job dealing with the heat when you work the processor. HP laptops are particularly bad with heat. I like a free program call core temp to monitor processor temps. He can set it to show highest core temp, auto start with windows and have it automatically minimize to the task bar. Puts the temp next to the clock at the bottom of the screen.

Once he gets done with movie maker you can spend a couple hundred and get a copy of Adobe Premier. It is not easy to use but you can grunt your way though it. In the end, if he gets good with it he can get a job editing. Premier is a profession software package. My high school uses it to teach video editing. The same students also tend to end up on school tv doing the weekly news. So he may eventually end up on school tv.

Good luck to him. If he is brave, he could also start a video blog on Ytube. If he wants to end up in the entertainment industry this is a great way to start.

Really isn't a huge deal once you learn to use one piece of edit software to switch to using another. The key is, you understand what you can do, you just need to learn how to do that in another piece of software when you switch.

Just don't get hooked on one piece of software, because if your son goes out into commercial editing, he will likely see almost every piece of software out there. TV stations tend to be hooked on what costs the least, not a specific system
Avid is big in Hollywood, and my station used it for years, but the cost of upgrading it from Standard Definition to High Definition was more than just buying a whole new system, in our case, EDIUS.
My wife's station also had AVID, but only for about 2 years. They now use a highly customized version of Adobe Premiere.
Final cut is also very popular in schools because Apple deeply discounts prices to schools........they don't give any discount to TV stations, so you won't see a lot of Final Cut.
