Video Camera - What to do with it on rides

I really want to bring my video camera, but I'm not sure if it is practical. What do you do when you go on the rides like Splash Mountain?

Do you just use it for a little while and then rent a locker?

I don't think I want to lug it around all day, every day??

Any experiences would be helpful.

How big is your camera? Our camera is one of the newer mini-DV's. Because it is so small we were able to get a fanny pack designed just for it- no bigger than some of the "normal" fanny packs others were wearing. It is padded and has room for more tape. We took it on all the rides. We did not go on Splash mountain (too cold) but we did survive a monsoon with it. It kept it dry with out a problem.

If you have a small camera check into finding a fanny pack for it.

It isn't huge, but it isn't one of the newer digitals. It is a VHS-C, so it wouldn't fit in a fanny pack.:(

We bring a large Zip Lock bag and put the camera in that and then into the backpack..

We brought our video camera with us everywhere (yes, even on the rides). As long as you hold on to them, and have a good case than it should be a problem.

I wore shorts with cargo pockets so I could carry my Mini-DV camera and digital camera without having to worry about losing a camera bag.

I bring my video camera and let the kids "narrate" the ride before/during/after. It makes great viewing at home, and they love playing announcer. I bring a backpack for the camera and other stuff. A couple of trips ago I wanted something to keep it dry yet quickly accessable. I found a soft lunch bag at Target. It's sort of like those soft ice chests, but smaller. My camer slides right in and it velcros shut for quick access. You never know when the Magic's gonna happen! Plus it's slightly padded to keep it from getting bounced around. And the bag fits in the backpack when we're on the go. I've filmed Splash Mountain and Kali River Rapids, and managed to slip the camera in the bag before the big splash. Pull it out afterwards and film everyone's expressions as they are soaking wet! Risky, but I get some fun shots by doing that...

I say turn it on and record the ride itself! I have recorded Splash Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain Rairoad, Dinosaur, Pirates of the Carribean and even Rock-N-Roller Coaster (used night shot) with no problems and my camera is a digital 8. Just for safety I put the camera under my shirt in cases where water was involved.

It is a great way to "re-ride" your favorite attractions anytime after you have come home and been reintroduced to the real world. Your own mini vacation anytime you want! :jester:

I wear my camera (mini dv) around my neck except when on rides, then I slip it off my neck, and wrap it around my hand. I have a gallon zip lock bag that i put it in for the wet rides (and it helped on our last trip when we watched the parade at MK, and the skies opened up! The plastic bag was held over the camera, and I was able to record the whole soggy parade!). I've also let the camera run to get kids reactions on the rides! One of my favorite is our younger DD's reaction on BTMRR. Just thinking about it brings a smile to my face!:wave2:

I have a little girl, still in a carriage, so I usually have my camera in her baby carriage. But, before we had her I used to rent a locker. I would tape what I wanted and then I would put it in the locker and take it out later. I don't feel like taping everything. I want some pictures but I want to have fun too without feeling like I have to tape everything....

Does the fanny pack you bought convert into a shoulder strapped bag? I saw someone with one of those in December but really didn't pay much attention to it. Now that I am back it seems like such a good idea. What kind of bag do you have and do you mind if I ask how much you paid for it?

Thanks!

I'm in the minority here. We don't bring our video camera into the parks any more. We always just ended up lugging it around & taping dumb things. It ended up that everyone fought over who was going to carry it.

When DH left it in The Land after lunch one day & we had to backtrack to get it I said enough. Now we just tape in the resorts & the pools.

Get a waterproof backpack, Eastpack and Jansports are great. That way you don't worry about wet rides, although if you can on Splash Mtn, let the person in front take the camera bag, they have more foot room and can tuck it under the lip, and the water will go over there head most times. I find the 2nd seat is the wettest. The Rapids have a big compartment in the middle with a plastic lid for personnels although it is not tight, things will still get wet.
