video camera ??? flight??

Most airports have a TSA person screaming take your laptop out of your bag. It's funny because at most airports most frequent fliers are standing there holding their laptop and their shoes because they know the drill.

Their shoes? What's this all about? Haven't flown in 9 yrs and I'm getting nervous.

Most Airports require you take your shoes off before you go through the detector.. the shoes are put in a bin and scanned through the machine separately.

In every airport I have been in, there are large signs telling you to remove your laptop from the bag. TSA officers are sure to remind you as you walk up. If they are not doing this in Logan, then I guess it is still behind the times with security trends.

Ted

I Did remove the Laptop... But one of the guards took everything else out of my bag after it had been screened... turned everything on and off and then put it back in.

Philadelphia wanted camcorders but not still cameras removed from bags. Seeing as how most digitals also take videos (mine can do a full twenty minutes of video!), again your tax dollars being wasted by idiots without a clue making arbitrary decisions.

NEVER check ANYTHING of value, medications or medical devices, or travel documents.

Sorry for the snip quote but this made me wonder. Do you know what they swab or and why or what prompts it?
TJ

Well, I'll snip right back, then! :)

I don't know for sure. I beleive they are testing for explosive residue. I'm not sure if the agent confirmed that when I asked, or if I even asked. I think he told me that if item is particularly dense or has things in it that are tough to discern on the X-ray, they do it. You figure when they do the swab, they get a look around inside, as well. There may also be a random component as well. If I were designing the system, I wouldn't do every fifth bag or something like that, but I'd have the scanning machine (in addition to operator requests for addtional screenings) indicate which bags should get screened on a random basis.... That is, it could pick the next bag for a secondary check or the 5th bag or anywhere in between.

I was suprised that my daughter was able to walk through with her lighted shoes - the ones with batteries and LED's built right in.

Oh, and I seem to remember at PHL that they weren't interested in "digital" camcorders, though my Mini-DV camcorder still counted for the bin treatment. I think what they meant was cameras that recorded video to solid-state memory rather than tape.

Thanks - IIRC they swabbed the outside and then didn't search the bag, that is what made me wonder.

Funny about the light up sneakers, my dd just got flip flops that light up and she won't take them off ~ and she is 8.

They did made my girls remove sneakers the last two times we flew, Feb and April. Evidently everything with a sole over a "certain" thickness now needs to be removed, including the kiddos favorites sketchers!! At least the girls thought it was cool and felt grown up and since they are used to the screening it was ok. With a younger kid or one not used to the procedure you may want to prepare them for the possibility.
