I am torn between feeling terribly excited at getting the chef's table for my anniversary on July 4th and being worried that I will miss the fireworks with my children. I am bringing my niece with me and she will watch the kids and take them to dinner somewhere fun while we do the special dinner but my hope is to meet up with them somewhere to watch fireworks together. Is there any chance of that happening? How long does it take to dine at the chef's table? Also, I am sure it is not nearly as romantic as eating in the main dining room but is it still a special occasion type of dining situation?

The Chef's table took us nearly 3 hours--we got there at 6:00 and weren't out until almost 9:00 on the dot.
Is the nite you planned for that the ONLY nite to see the fireworks??

Thanks for the quick reply. No, it is not the only night we planned to see the fireworks, but it is the 4th of July which is the best night for fireworks. It also happens to be my anniversary. I don't know what I was thinking when I picked that first Saturday in July without thinking about the future with our children who naturally want to see fireworks with us on that night. My hope is that the fireworks might be late that night. I am the most guilt ridden person in the world. I am really trying to be excited about the dinner and put the guilt to the side, but it is hard. It would be great if I could do the dinner with my husband and ALSO watch the fireworks with my kids. Three hours for dinner might make that possible is the reservation is at 6:00, don't you think?

It should work out OK, as the fireworks are apt to be later in the evening--and on the 4th, there is likely to be a "special" event. Wish I could say for sure, but we always are at WDW in either May or Sept.
Since you two would be "dressed up", you may not want to wander too far from the GF to see the fireworks. If he kids could eat in the vicinity, you could all meet up after dinner and watch the fireworks from the GF. We often do that when we eat at Narcoosee's--watch the show from the porch just outside the restaurant. And lots of folks seem to sit on the lawn around Seven Seas Lagoon.

Forgot about the second part of your question. No--Chef's table isn't quite as "romantic" as the main V&A area, but it is special enough in it's own right.
Which adds an option to your planning--do the main room, and then you are looking at 2-2 1/2 hours for dinner.

The fireworks on the 4th of July at the MK have been at 9:00 for the past 7 years. And you can only watch them from the veranda at Narcoossee's if you are dining at the restaurant (or had dined earlier in the evening). Since you are dining at V&A's, you may get permission to view them from Narcoossee's (I'd ask the maitre'd). There is security stationed at both entrances to the veranda with priority seating lists.
