Out of curiousity, I checked what our 2 bedroom lake view over Christmas week would cost now that they are taking cash reservations at VGF.

They are asking just under $2,000 per night for the 2 bedroom lake view. They are asking just under $1,800 for the standard view.

So, 6 nights (the length of our stay) was going to be around $12,000 just for the room.

At least we will start making back some of our purchase price on our first visit!

The lake view 2 bedroom for these same 6 nights cost 650 points. Not cheap. However, compared to cash, not bad. It also means any rental under $18 per point would save you money over cash for this week. At $11 per point rental, it is a big savings over cash.

Just interesting data. I do not know how other times of the year compare.

Just remember that you're only "making back some of your purchase price" if you would have been willing and would have paid that price anyway. ;)

It is a great way to justify our purchases, though; isn't it? :)

I was thinking that myself.

Would we have paid the cash price? Probably not. I am guessing I would have tried a different deluxe resort with a lower cost. However, am I happy that we are staying at VGF for Christmas? Absolutely yes!

Therefore, DVC has already allowed me to try an experience I probably would have passed on previously. For some, that would lower the financial return for DVC because I am not comparing what my true replacement vacation cost would have been. However, for us, it has already increased our perceived value because it has allowed us to try a vacation we would not have tried before DVC.

It makes ones personal ROI on DVC murky and this is just our first trip!

Congrats and welcome home! We also purchased at GFV--week 51. This year we already have other plans at BLT. I plan to rent my week this year. Do you think $18/point is reasonable or should I just rent it as a fixed week 51 rental? Anyone out there with VGF rental experience yet?:santa:

Man that is a whole new bag of worms. I've seen VGF rentals asking $16-18 per point, but isn't it a premium for the fixed week? How does that work anyway....do you have to use that week or can you "trade out" and get the points equivalent?

The fixed week option basically gives you the right of first refusal for that week every year until the end of your contract. If you want to use your fixed week you don't have to do anything--the reservation is automatically made for you. If you don't want to use it you can cancel it and get your points to use in standard DVC fashion. There is flexibiltiy.
