VGF - 150 pts direct, no October use years

My husband tried to purchase 150 pts direct at VGF and asked for an October use year. He was told no unless we got a favorite week in November that was 167 points so we would have to purchase more than the 150 we wanted to purchase. We already told our guide we will buy resale (he doesn't care).

Has anyone been able to get 150 pts direct at VGF and an October use year recently?

As the number of points get down in terms of sales, DVC might decide to be stricter in giving people certain UYs. Having said that, I would still tell the guide that Oct UY is what works the best for your travel periods, and that you would appreciate special approval to have that UY so that you can buy.

It is normal that they try to gear sales to specific UYs...they assign X number of points to each and they always need to make sure they have enough in a unit to sell someone...and why they will sometimes say they need approval.

But, I have so far never heard of anyone who stood firm that it was was met their needs the best not end up getting it so the sale could happen.

I wonder if that would also apply to Sept UY. Would you consider that?

We waffled back and forth between Sept and Oct UY when buying resale knowing we were least likely to travel in summer. We landed on a Sept UY and it’s worked out well. I can start walking Oct trips sooner, and the rare May visits are fine since I’d need to cancel at least 31 days out (to avoid holding) which is still in my banking window.

Buying that small resale contract first turned out beneficial too. We were able to get better incentives as already existing members, plus they automatically wanted to match our Sept UY for direct VGF.

That certainly is a change in how they have done it but maybe they have decided given the success of the MB program that they are going to be hardlined with these fall UYs unless one already has it.

We did not. But our guide was pretty much take it our leave it so it really didn't seem like a conversation. We would not be able to use the 2022 points (unless they would let us bank them) - we have a child currently with some developmental issues so traveling between now & October likely won't happen. But maybe my husband can re-approach our guide and see if they would let us bank them. It feels like pulling teeth to buy in!

She says, as others have mentioned, an Oct UY would need an exception but yes, she says it can be done. I'd continue to push back on your Guide and before you give in on the preferred UY, maybe ask a different Guide.

Our Guide also confirmed that once you have a membership then when you do an add-on they will automatically match the existing UY. So not a great option, but a possible work around. I'd start with continued pushback and even calling in and asking for a diff Guide just to check.

A different guide might not make a difference. It's possible that Disney has no 2022 points left in inventory to sell you.

Disney does not hold points in inventory hoping someone will will buy them. As it gets closer to the end of a use year, they rent out the rooms represented by those soon-to-expire points to the general public. That may be why the guide said you could have October if you waited until 10/1/2023 to buy. Then the current use year points will be back 'in stock' again. (They are obligated to include current use year points in a sale).

It's really too bad that they don't explain that to prospective buyers when that is the case.

I was able to get my first direct contract for VGF with Oct UY . Didn't have any push back at all, I actually waffled between wanting Sept YT and Oct UY but my guide recommended me Oct. But as others have stated in the thread perhaps they may be running out of points for that UY since more folks are aware of the incentives and may have decided to take the plunge in becoming DVC members or buying more points.

Are you a current owner with an Aug UY? Or a new buyer? I do know that what they have to do for current owners is different since they will match a UY you already own without issue.

But, we are also hearing others getting the needed approval as new buyers for UYs other than Feb!

I did have an Aug UY already. My guide told me that they had August inventory available for me to add on to my existing UY.

I bought 150 direct VGF points 3 weeks ago with an October UY and it came with the 2022 points - I'm a new member and my guide needed to get approval for October (she offered February) but it wasn't an issue.

I haven’t seen a resort that has an equal amount of points per use year. They don’t even have the same percentage per month for different resorts. DVC a few years back kind of realized an easier way to buy contracts back for the demand. They allowed themselves to change the use year and resell the points, changing the ratio of use year for the resorts. I really don’t see the issue as long as 90% of the points are not in one group of use years like September, October.
