Veterinarians-lactating cats?

I know someone who recently took a feral lactating cat to be spayed. The veterinarian said that even though the cat was lactating, when he went to spay her (which I'm surprised he did, but that's another story) he said she'd never been pregnant. He claims that she was lactating without having been pregnant, like people with a "false pregnancy". Even though I looked on the internet, I've never heard of such a thing. Is there such a thing as lactation without pregnancy?
