Veteran's Day on Tuesday. Is it observed on Monday? Crowds after Monday?

We're booking hotel rooms today and I want to make sure I've chosen a good week without huge crowds. We're planning on right after Veteran's Day, Nov 12-16. Veteran's Day is on Tuesday, the 11th and our school district has that day off instead of Monday so that makes me wonder if that is common and if the rest of the week might see more crowds because of it? I thought for some reason that usually businesses and schools took off the Monday near Veteran's Day to make it a three day weekend? What do you guys think? Good week or not?

In my experience the Veteran's Day holiday (observed by schools, banks, post office, et cetera) is always on the actual date (November 11).

Thanks! I wonder how this will affect crowds that week? Anyone know or have a guess? Would it be a mistake to book a trip that Wed-Sun? (Day after Veteran's Day) Do your school districts get more days off that week than just the day of Vet's Day?

Ditto. My mom's birthday is 11/11, and her siblings were always jealous b/c school was closed on her bithday....

How funny we are planning almost the same trip. I also need to know if Christmas decorations will be up that week too? I asked on another board if it's crowded later that week Wed-Sat and if the Christmas Decorations are up? I'm not going to bother going then if not. How about the following week 20-22 Wed-Sat BEFORE Thanksgiving? Crowded then or will Thanksgiving week be the BIG CROWDS??

THANKS

Our last day of our trip in 2006 was on Veteran's Day. It was a Friday! (Didn't see that one coming). All week long the park was empty, on Friday it was packed before lunch. We left at about 11:00 a.m. I was told they closed the park later in the day.

Hi! This date planning thing is tricky stuff. LOL From my research the following week is supposed to be good too but I was concerned that weekend (the one before Thanksgiving) would be more crowded than the one after Vet's Day because a lot of people start arriving then. I just can't decide which one we should do. I definitely want to hit the christmas parade and fireworks show though. Also, I found the calendar from last year http://www.laughingplace.com/Guide-Cal-DLR2-200711.asp and they started the Christmas shows on the 16th, but Thanksgiving was earlier (the 22nd) so it was the weekend before Thanksgiving. This year, with it being so much later, the 27th, I wonder if they won't be starting the shows until the weekend before--the 21st. Can you give me the link on the other board that you asked these questions?

Anyone know if the Christmas stuff starts around a certain date or if it revolves around when Thanksgiving is?

Yep Veterns days is one of the holidays that is observed on the actual day. No making it a Monday/3-day weekend. That said anytime there is a holiday you can expect bigger crowds.

I am looking at our 08-09 calendar for our district. The schools are in session here on Veteran's Day.

They are indeed starting Christmas shows & fireworks at that date, the 21st.

I asked Disney Travel when I booked our trip, I was hoping we could hit the Christmas stuff too. They confirmed that the first day of the Christmas Parade is November 21st.

It seems like the other Christmas events to start have started at the same time in previous years. So I imagine it will be the same this year.

Thank you SO much!! Hopefully I can get our family to agree to waiting until that week as well then. I definitely want to hit the Christmas parade and stuff. We are going with my BIL & FIL's families so hopefully they will agree! :santa:

OK soo YES Friday the 21st I plan on some crowds. BUT do you think the earlier part of the week will be quieter? Wed-Fri? I HATE this second guessing stuff. With Thanksgiving soo much later this year, it's harder and harder to plan family vacations.

We went last Veteran's Day Weekend and stayed until the next weekend. The parks were busy on Saturday and Sunday, but not nearly as bad as I thought they would be. We went to Universal and Knott's on Monday (Vet's Day) and Tuesday then spent the rest of the week at DL/DCA.

On Wednesday & Thursday, the parks felt nearly empty compared to the previous weekend. We collected FPs for Splash, Space, Indy & Soarin' in the mornings as we rode the attractions, (all walk ons) then used them at night. Grizzly was a walk on both days even though it was quite warm. Even CA Screamin had only a 5 minute wait in the mornings.

Friday morning was fine, however, that night was crazy busy...but that was also the official opening of the holiday season.

My advice, same as everyone else....get to the park early, collect FPs during those first few hours, then just go with the flow and use those passes later in the day. We honestly didn't notice the crowds, not even the Veteran's Day weekend crowds, until that last Friday night.

When did the tree go up? Was it up before Friday the "official first day of the holiday season" or was it up earlier in the week?

thanks
