So my DH's school district took back Veteran's Day. They said it would be a good opportunity to have the kids come to school and talk about Veteran's rather than stay home and do nothing. Although, critics are saying the board is catering to the parents who want to jump start their summer vacations.

I have a problem with this (and not just because DH won't be home that day to work around the house  ). The social studies teachers in his school spend the week leading up to Vet's Day talking about them and even bringing in local vets to talk with the kids. And every Vet's Day, DH and I take our kids to a wreath laying ceremony. I always see local girl/boy scout troops there and other parents with their young families. So obviously plenty of people understand the purpose of that day.

I know there are plenty of days off in the school year. But Veteran's Day shouldn't be given up. Just my opinion though.

They have taken a couple of holidays back from our kids. One of them is a religious holiday for us so we still keep the kids home. I feel that if you are using the day for your kids to understand the meaning of that day and to have quality family time together then you shouldn't feel quilty for keeping them out of school that day. The teachers at our daughters' school have been very supportive in this matter.

Our schools have never had Veteran's Day off.

We never had Veteran's Day off when I was in GA public school. Maybe they get it now, I don't know.

Our school system has never had a holiday on Veteran's Day either.

Wow! I never knew so HAD school that day.

Off topic for Carol - great job on the weight loss!

I don't think our kids were off for Veteran's Day. Since you mentioned summer vactions did you mean Memorial Day?

I always thought that having MLK day off was a waste, myself. The best way to honor the man is to keep the kids IN school and teach them about him and the civil rights movement, not let them stay home and play video games. Heck, I even thought this when I was in school myself (didn't stop me from having fun on my day off though! :) ).

Veteran's Day is my son's birthday, so while we like having this day off, we don't celebrate it in relation to veterans.

I was shocked this year to learn that my college did NOT have President's Day off but did take both Martin Luther King and Cesar Chavez Day off. I was a little perturbed by that message. King and Chavez both did great things, no argument, but for the love of peanut butter the things PRESIDENTS Washington and Lincoln did were at LEAST as important.

I don't think our school's have ever had Veteran's day off. I was surprised when DS had MLK off. When I was in school, we never had those type of days off.

Veteran's day is a Sat this year anyway.

We didn't get Veteran's Day off either. I was a little surprised to have to work on Good Friday too. Holidays off seem to be gradually decreasing.

What I think the OP meant was that by going to school on Veteran's Day, the children will get out of school one day earlier at the end of the school year.
