A friend asked me this question, and I do not know the answer. They're going to WDW next week and their son is not yet 3 years old. He is very tall for his age though. Will they need to show a birth certificate to prove that he's under 3?

Thanks!
Jody

It would seem that having a copy would nip any potential problems in the bud. Only takes a minute to copy - could avoid a lot of headaches in the parks.

She's paranoid about that, since the birth certificate reads "do not photo copy" and she doesn't want to get in trouble. She says that it will take a few weeks to get a second copy to take with them, cuz she doesn't want to take the chance of losing their only one.

Weird, ours doesn't say that. I wonder why? Hmmm. Even so, I would probably do it anyway. I wonder why anyone would even care? Anyway if she's that paranoid, she could keep the copy w/her and destroy it when she gets home from her trip. No one at Disney is going to "report" her for it that's for sure! I seriously doubt anyone will even hassle her about her childs age though. My ds is tall for his age and we have never been questioned or even looked at sideways by anyone at WDW. Usually, he was in a stroller when we went thru the front gate, so maybe that helped. The worst thing that will happen is that someone will (in a friendly way) ask her dd how old she is (like adults like to ask kids all the time). So unless her dd likes to tell people she's older than she really is, she won't have a problem.

hth!

Our son is very tall for his age too, always has been. They never questioned us once at Disney.

If they are flying, I would tell them to bring it, b/c if the airline people think the kid is older than 2, they won't let him on the plane w/o proof of his age or buying a ticket for him.

The child is 34mos. The oldest a child can fly without a ticket is 24mos. So if she's flying, she should have bought a ticket and she won't need a b/c as proof of age. Just fyi. :)

Why on earth would a birth certificate say do not copy? You need copies for school records. My son needed a copy to play football - every player had to verify their age. I'm puzzled!

Maybe (just guessing here) because usually when you actually need a birth cert for something they need a certified copy--as good as an "original" so you have to get that from the courthouse? Anytime I have needed to provide one it has always been a certified copy that was necessary.

Easy enough to make a copy, I agree. Be prepared Just In Case.

We've got a very tall for his age son, too. We have often carried his birth certificate and never needed it. (Of course, when DH is with us, it is easy to explain, since DH is 6'4".) I have had people look at me strangely and clearly wonder if I'm trying to pulll a fast one, but no one has ever demanded a birth certificate.

No cast member is going to question the child's age. Period. You don't have to provide proof that he is not yet 3. Tickets and meal plans are purchased (or don't apply) in good faith. Airlines only let children under 2 fly without a ticket, so a birth certificate for this purpose would not apply. Have a great trip!

No one asks. This proved to be annoying on our last trip. DS was 3 and no longer "free". We bought him park hoppers. Several times we had to remind the CM's to swipe his park hopper pass. They figured he was under 3 since he was in a stroller. Grrrr.

My DS at 2 1/2 was the size of a 4 year old (not just in height, but he looked it in the face too). He has always looked a lot older than he is. No one even blinked an eye at Diseny. We had no issues at the gates or any of the restaurants (since they don't have to pay at the buffets under 3 either).
