I read the Pope has only one lung?

DH had abdominal surgery in November and caught pneumonia while in the hospital, which caused a collapsed lung. He never really felt like he recovered from the surgery (he has to drag himself to work) and last week he found out why -- he still has a partially collapsed lung and may need additional treatment.

I can see how having only one working lung is sapping his energy.

To have that as a permanent condition, and still become a world leader . . . Very impressed.

I have a thankful heart every time I think about the fact that he took St. Francis of Assisi as his papal name. What a statement about his papacy from the start!

I'm not Catholic, but I have high hopes for this Pope!

He is humble. A great attribute.

I heard it was taken from Francis Xavier, one of the Jesuit founders, as this guy is a Jesuit himself.

I'm not impressed at all. I agree with President Fernandez's comparision to, "“medieval times and the Inquisition.”

Many thought this at first, but the new Pope has since said that he chose the name for Saint Francis of Assisi.

We are not Roman Catholic, but DD10 has been fascinated by the whole process since the retirement of the former Pope. She is really bummed that the Episcopal/Anglican Church doesn't have that level of ceremony. Not too worried about her converting just for the dramatic elements though--she doesn't like, and doesn't understand, the no marriage idea.

He may be humble, but he is widely described as being "theologicially orthodox and socially conservative".

He has been on the record as being opposed to same sex marriage and adoption by same sex couples and is against the use of contraception.

I don't know why that would surprise anyone. It IS the catholic church after all. :confused3

The fact that he has one lung does not impress me as much as seeing what he will do to clean up the corruption, backstabbing, and cronyism in the Curia.

And if the Church has expressed the desire to grow its membership and become more relevant in today's world, it may need to get out of its medieval values.

To his credit, he does believe in the use of condoms for the prevention of diseases.

If I didn't believe in the covenants that the church I belonged to believed in, I would leave the church.
In fact we have. Twice.

I agree there is now word coming out on him being quiet and complacent about the disappeared in Argentina. They accuse muslims of not being in the modern world and have elected another pope who doesn't want to modernise the church.

This makes no sense to me. The Church holds those values because it truly and wholeheartedly feels they are right. And if that is the case, why would they change them to please others?

By definition, one's values cannot simply be changed in order to please others. If so, they were never really values to begin with.

I agree. It makes me laugh to think that people held out hope that the new pope was going to be some liberal who was all for same-sex marriage. The Church makes no secret about it's teachings and values. Did we really think they were going to appoint someone opposed to those values as its leader? :confused3

I can sort of understand their views on same sex marriage. I can't understand their views on contraception there are too many places where children are starving to death because of lack of food. I can't understand how a family having to watch their children starve is so godly.

Agreed. Although I knew the comments/criticisms were coming, what do people really expect? Change, if it happens at all, will happen s-l-o-w-l-y.

As far as the OP, I like Pope Francis already. There's something about him that I liked right away. I loved his first remarks, had a tear in my eye.

So what is better fewer children by using contraception or more babies starving to death because there is no food for them?

Or how about not having sex outside of marriage (the thought!) or using Family Planning? Neither method is perfect, but then again, no method of contraception is. And sense when does every child that happens because of a lack of contraception end up starving?

I'm actually a very liberal Catholic, but I would never think they would have a Pope that would go crazy and start handing out contraception and marrying same sex couples. I'm not sure why people think the church should hand out birth control.
