Ok. We just returned from a great trip to Disney.

BUT, I saw the most disgusting thing happen on our second day at Magic Kingdom. I was in the restroom in Toontown and there in the bathroom was a woman letting her daughter use the sink as a toilet!! I had read about someone else seeing this, but I could not believe it! I was so stunned I just walked around to the other side, but then I got to thinking what makes her think that's okay?? So, I went back over to her and said, "you know that is really disgusting, we wash our hands in that sink, little kids wash their hands in that sink, what makes you think that is okay??" She just looked at me like I had three heads and giggled. She didn't speak English, but I knew she knew what she was doing was wrong. There wasn't a line and there was plenty of stalls open (not that I would agree with it anyway). And, her daughter wasn't a baby either, she had to be at least five!

I couldn't wait to get out of there and tell DH, I told him I wanted to find a CM and tell them, but he said what are they going to do about it...kick her out? IMO, she should have been. But, I know that's wishful thinking.

I wouldn't let my kids wash their hands in the sinks the rest of the trip. I wonder what other disgusting things I don't see! :crazy2::scared:

You have got to be kidding me! Gag, gag, gag!!! How disgusting! I never cease to be amazed at how disgustingly rude some people can be! I wish there had been a CM close by you could have told. I doubt they would have done anything, either, but still... Ew!

Yuck. I guess that I don't get why you wouldn't let your kids wash their hands. People change babies, take care of their own personal stuff and use the sinks too. What is the difference, if something gets into the sink?

With the flu going around, I wouldn't skip hand washing.

eta: there must have been some reason a mom thought this to be ok. If she didn't speak english, and giggled, how do you know she knew it was wrong?

If people act like that out in public in view of everyone...the scary thing is how they conduct themselves behind closed doors at home:scared1:

To the previous poster - not much better...

A good friend of mine had a roommate who did that all the time in the sink in their dorm room while they were cadets at the USAF Academy; she put her toothbrush in her shower caddy and brushed her teeth there the entire time they roomed together. This girl was a FREAK in so many other ways but honestly I had no idea other people really did this in public:confused3

Oh, I DID have my kids wash their hands but I got paper towels put soap on it and washed and rinsed them like that (a bit of a pain, but we ALWAYS wash after using the restroom)...I didn't want them leaning over the sink. Plus, some anti-bacterial for good measure. ;)

Just because she didn't speak english, you think she didn't understand that toilets are for waste and sinks are for washing, cmon...I think it was just laziness or some other poor excuse.

Peeing in the sink was probably a step up for them. My guess is they probably go in a ditch in their backyard.....just kidding....ok, maybe I'm not kidding...;)

Now I have seen this sort of behavior in the past, so I am not 100% surprised, but my experience was at a drunken college house party, not Disney...

Last year while waiting for Spectro there was 2 women and a young girl maybe 4 or 5 yrs old. They didn't speak English and the girl was crying/whining and fidgety and the Mother was annoyed with her. The whole time I was thinking here is another parent that drug their kid all over the place and is now annoyed with them because they are tired. This went on for about a half an hour and then the girl starting crying really hard. All of the sudden my DD (23 yrs old) looks at me like this  She then says My foot is wet!!! The Mother then looks at DD and says in very broken English. I am sorry, my daughter is afraid of your self flushing toilets and hasn't gone to the bathroom since this morning.

This poor little girl was probably in so much pain and her Mother must have been at her wits end. What you saw in the bathroom may have been the same situation and the sink was the only thing the Mother could think of to help her DD. I don't think it's the best solution but desperate times.....

For those of you who have children afraid of the self flushing toilets carry a pack of post it notes. You can place one over the sensor and the toilet wont flush until you remove it.

There are some cultures that do not believe in sitting on a toilet. I can't tell you how many housekeepers from other countries (I used to be a housekeeping manager at a hotel) would break the toilets because the stood on the toilet to go to the bathroom. There are also bathrooms in the middle east where the toilets resemble more of a sink, than a toilet. They have a hose to rinse off too. Yes, given that we use toilets in the United States, this would be odd, but things are different everywhere so I could see the confusion. BTW, urine is sterile so unless she was doing the other option, you shouldn't be worried about your children getting sick because someone may have peed in the sink. There are worse germs that can go around from all the other things people touch. Another perspective - maybe they use a bidet?

Yes, it is odd, and I would be a bit taken aback by it, but as long as someone wasn't pooping in the sink, I would be okay with it.

As gross as I think it is, there are some cultures who do not use toilets. You said that they didn't speak English so it could be the case that she really didn't know it was wrong.

How could she not know it was wrong when she is obviously in America and can see people going into use a toliet and washing their hands in a sink and not peeing in it? Am I making sense? LOL...I'm sure that while on her trip, at the airport, restaurants, etc......she was aware of how people use bathrooms in America. Not wanting to do something and not knowing about it are two different things and I just find it hard to believe someone doesn't know that's not the way things are done here.

I know everyone isn't the same but I would obviously do my research before visiting a foreign country and I would never go to a place where I felt uncomfortable doing something.

You know, this makes sense and could explain why she did that. If my dd5 was terrified of a self flushing toilet, what would I do? I don't know. But this explanation makes me more understanding of why it was done. When little kids have to go they have to go, but not when the toilet monster threatens to suck them in. :sad2:

You should see the boys bathroom in the elementary school where I work. I have to take preschool boys to the bathroom. Mostly I just stand in the doorway and make sure they're OK but sometimes I have to actually go inside. The kindergartners and first graders who use the bathroom like to do their business in the drain on the floor instead of the toilet or urinal. I try to avoid that area since there's always a puddle around it.

I asked the custodian what's going on and there seems to be no reason for it. He originally thought it could be a cultural thing since most of the families at that school are immigrants. But the kids have been told by their teachers over and over to use the proper facilities. Apparently it's become like a game to see who can pee in the drain without being caught. The poor custodian mops that bathroom at least 4 times during the day. I've started taking my kids to another bathroom that seems to be cleaner. And we always wash their hands in the classroom. I've seen too many weird things in and around the sinks that I'd rather not touch them!

I looked at my wife on day 3 of our last Disney trip and asked: What is the lousiest area of any of the four Disney Parks in which to frequent the Lavatory?

She didn't really have a quick answer, but when I said "TOONTOWN" she immediately agreed because the whole section is basically kids under 7 for 12 hours a day.

Do the math. Kids are messy, in a rush, etc. The toontown can is vile at all times except maybe 3 minutes after rope drop.

I wouldn't let my cat piss in there. He doesn't even use a litter box, he's gone outside his whole life!

SO, because they may be afraid of the toilet it is okay for them to use the sinks instead?

My DS did not like them at all either, but we have used the stickies tip, too. :thumbsup2 If I don't have a sticky then, well, he just has to go without it. And, like I said this didn't look like someone who was just trained...

AND, that must mean that they use the sinks the entire trip to do their business (and if they ARE indeed scared of the flushing, then I suppose they ARE using them for #2, as well!:scared1:). I'm sorry, but even if they are foreign, I find it hard to believe that they don't know what a toilet is used for...
