As I posted earlier, DH and I want to go back to WDW around Labor Day this year since it is most convenient for us to take off work around that time. This happens to fall during the Free DDP time period. Now, we are annual passholders and have the DDE card, so we have never considered using the DDP. Now that it's free, I have this nagging thought in the back of my head... "But it's FREE..."

Here are the issues.

1) We strongly prefer to stay off-property. We have gotten a 2BR condo in Windsor Hills for $109 a night, which is much, much, MUCH quieter than the resorts (our #1 concern when we go on vacation is being woken up by screaming outside our door). We cannot stand noise when we are trying to sleep and we have found the Caribbean Beach resort and POR (which are comparable to the nightly cost of the 2BR condo - which also has a kitchen and washer/dryer) to be too noisy for us.

2) Obviously we will have to rent a car to stay off-property and "technically" we would not to stay on-property. However, last time we stayed on property and relied on Disney Transportation we were miserable. We swore we would never visit again without a rental car (also, we really enjoy eating at the different hotels, and it's hard to get from resort to resort via Disney Transportation). So this cost is pretty much a wash. I think we'll rent regardless of where we stay.

3) Being AP holders, we do not need to buy tickets for park entry. I understand that you need to purchase a "Magic Your Way" package to receive the free DDP. Do you have to purchase a ticket for every day you would be in the park, or could you just purchase a 1-day ticket (times 2 people)?

4) Can you get the AP discount on hotels during this time? We would probably consider the Beach Club which is $315 a night but w/ the 20% discount we could get it down to $252 a night. Still more expensive than the condo but we'd be getting free food (let's say approximately $100 per day for the two of us for simplicity's sake). Or has anyone stayed at a less expensive resort that was actually somewhat quiet?

Any other AP holders struggling with this dilemma? The truth is we really prefer to stay off-property, that's just our preference because it's so much quieter and we get the additional kitchen and laundry facilities. I just can't silence this "BUT IT'S FREE!!!" thought and feel like a sucker if we pay OOP during that time, ESPECIALLY considered we have tried to get ADR's and we are shut out of a lot of places we wanted to go.

Any advice is appreciated.

Maybe I'm missing something here but ..........
2 br condo at $109 a night or
Disney for $252 a night

The way I look at it you're paying an extra $143 a night to stay at Disney and get "FREE" dining ? Is it really "FREE" ?? I doubt you will spend $143 a day just on your meals or maybe I'm wrong.

It seems you don't like staying at Disney so why bother ? It seems the car is needed no matter where you stay.

Correct me here if I'm wrong, sure hope I didn't miss something in the numbers.

You have to pay rack rate for your stay, so no AP room discount.

You only need a 1 day ticket for each member of your party, regardless of how many nights you stay in a resort.

You could figure out what you would save by eating on free dining, then subtract out the cost of 1 day tickets for each room guest, then subtract out the cost of the full rack rate room. You may end up better off offsite and use your DDP card!

As you've discovered from your situation, "free dining" isn't really "free", but Disney has done a great job of marketing!!!

Yes, the difference of $143 per night is a lot, and I realized that as I was writing my post. The thing is we don't technically "have" to stay at the Beach Club, we could find a less expensive resort. I just gave that as an example. You are right that it's not really "free" - just like our AP's don't give us "free" trips to Disney since we have all the other related expenses, but we still keep going! :rotfl2:

All right ... I am not even doing the money thing. The DDP is just too much darn food! We used it for our first two trips (not free but it was a good value if you paid what the meal really cost) and loved it. But even with all the walking ... it was too much food. Next time we will pay OOP and just not eat as much. That's just my 2 cents!

I'm pretty sure you pay rack rate on the room when utilizing the free dining plan, so I'm not sure if the AP rate would apply. Someone else might know more about this than me though.

Thanks for the advice everyone... I realized what I really wanted to do. I didn't want to feel like a sucker paying OOP when everyone else is eating for free (and at normal hours when we'll be eating at 9 pm every day), but the tradeoff of staying at a hotel we won't enjoy isn't worth it. I should have realized it... I work in retail and we try to get people to buy extra with "buy one get one half off" when they're really just spending for the extra half they wouldn't have bought anyway!

free dining is actually free. If you buy a package they give you the dining plan free. We always buy a package so for us this is a bonus. If we were staying at another time we would be buying the same package, and also be purchasing the dining. Just because people who typically stay off site or get room codes with their APs and don't buy myw tickets would not be saving money buy getting the free dining plan does not mean that the offer does not include a free dining plan. This has nothing to do with marketing.

As for the OPs Questions:
you can not get discounts on the room rate w/ the dining plan. You only have to purchase 1 myw ticket and while you don't really need it I *think* (although I'm not an AP holder, I have read on here) that you can put the purchase toward your next AP purchase. I really can't offer you advice on which would work out best for you, as I believe there are benifits and drawbacks for each family. For my family buying packages works the best. For others it does not. For my family the dining plan is very much worth it even when it is not free. For other families they feel like it's too much food, to structured, etc, and so it is not worth it.

tricia.

Free dining is a great deal if you stay in a value resort - the more expensive the resort the less of a value it is. We bought 1 day base tickets and when we got there we used them towards the cost to renew our annual passes, no problem. It doesn't sound like you would enjoy a value resort since you're used to a lot of room, so I don't think it would be a good choice for you.

i think everyones situation is different. we are a family of 6 ... so free dining to us is a HUGE savings. we would stay on site anyway... rely on disney transportation, so we would be eating all meals at disney. the dining plan saved us a lot of money. we saved all of our dining/snack reciepts from our august 06 trip. the total was just over $1500.

I wonder if anyone remembers what room rates were in August and September before the advent of free dining. WDW just traded one discount for the other in my opinion.

Gina2000: I don't think that's true -- we are staying at POP for $84/night and are getting free dining. The cheapest we've ever stayed at a value was $65 two years ago at POP making it about $20 more/night. So resort for 4 nights is an extra $80 and we are saving $640 with FREE DDP (4 adults @ $40). Correct me if I am wrong. Brenda

I'm not sure how someone could talk you into doing free dining unless you totally change your plans ;) IF you stay value or moderate and book a TS meal for each night of your stay and just do a 1 day ticket for each member of your party and are willing to tolerate disney transportation, then the free dining promotion is absolutely the way to go. If you want to stay deluxe and rent a car and don't have all your ADRs anyway, then free dining isn't a savings for your family. No big deal- sounds like you'll have a great time anyway- you love visiting and you've gotten a great deal on nice accommodations! Enjoy your trip and don't worry that the folks at the table next to you may be eating for "free."
(You don't know that for sure anyway- they may be paying b/c they are DVC members or they may have booked outside the free dining booking window or they didn't know about the code or they are there on a convention or something else that prohibits them from using the free dining promotion!)

But.... I LOVE the dining plan and it's something that is fun to experience at least once! Maybe someday you can rent points for DVC - getting a reasonable rate for your deluxe level accommodations, not have to buy tickets and still get to buy the dining plan!
;)

Hi, PatsGirl! I don't know about Values, but we stayed at POFQ, a moderate resort, in fall 2004 (before Free Dining). We got a PIN code rate of $86/night- the rack rate was, I think, around $133/night. So, the savings was approx $45/night. Still not as good as the savings with Free Dining for the 3 of us ($80/day in 2005, $89/day now).

Folks staying Value or Moderate probably make out better with Free Dining, but at a Deluxe, unless there are all adults and the maximum number of guests allowed per room, the discount amt would likely be better than Free Dining.

The only reason I ask is because in the past I had occasionally seen All Stars around $49 per night. I have no idea what time of the year it was or how far back it was but it's always stuck in my mind. At that price (assuming it was legit), it's a push for a couple. I've also seen values for as high as $129/night though not at that time of the year.

There has been so much play in room rates that it's hard to figure out where the breakeven could be.

I think your decision to select the accommodations you'll be the most comfortable in is best. Have a great time, we'll be there the same time.

Even if Disney traded one discount for another when offering free dining vs cheaper room rates, they are offering an enhanced Disney experience for the same money. The dining plan allows you to eat well and eat w/o cooking, prepping, shopping, dishes, etc. Mom what a treat right?!!! Also if your kids eat some, but not all you are not so uptight because you didn't just reach in your wallet and pay the check, your meals have been for paid beforehand. The DDP is food, but it is also part of the experience. Signature dining, shows, Character meals, quick bites, outrageous snacks, etc. all at the most magical place on earth. Where do I sign up?

I know on these boards we "value" the restaurants so some will stress over what they got. Bottom line, the worst place at Disney is probably as good a Friday's, Olive Garden, etc., places many families would seek out for vacation dinners. Don't stress too much over getting ADRs, we will all get to eat. Some places you'll love and others will just be food, just like if you were eating on your own anyway.

This is my first time staying onsite. I usually prefer a kitcen or at least a microwave and fridge to help with meal costs and comfort. $145/night is an excellent rate (Moderate Value season) for the amenities offered. To also take care of my food and dining needs(ie. eats vs experience) is icing on top. Oh yea, I won't need a car so I won't pay $3/gal to fill it up. Obviously Disney knows this and expects me to spend that cash on other things (event tickets, upgrade room or ticket, souveniers, etc.) I'll spend some on golf, but I usually golf on vacation.

My expectation is I will become spoiled and never want to do Disney another way. If you own the stock that's just want you want to occur! I don't own it. In 90 days I'll let you know if my prediction was right. Thanks for sharing your thread and letting me get this out!

Less than 90 days to go :woohoo:

We used to go all the time with the $49.00 rates - hasn't happened in the last couple of years! The last time we went using AP rates it was $69.00 night.

How did you get a $84.00 rate for 4 adults? They aren't charging the extra adult charges?

If you have 4 people in the room, and 2 of them are your children under 18, but over the child rate for the DDP, then they are considered adults on the dining plan, but you are not charged extra for them in the room. My DD17 and I will be staying in September at Pop Century with Free Dining, and although she is considered an adult, I am not charged the 'extra adult' fee for her.

I get it now, that's a good deal! I'm paying the same thing for 2 people.
