Just got an email from a friend of mine. She has been having episodes of vertigo for 6 months. The Dr. says she has hearing loss in one ear and the Dr.'s quess is that the vertigo may be caused by a growth on a nerve.

They are going to run more tests but I was wondering if anyone had any experience with a situation like this. Thanks!!

I suffer from Vertigo. Though I only had to go to the hospital once for it. First time it hit me, I was scared to death!!! Thought I was going to die!!! Doctor in ED told me that it was a nerve in the ear that gets triggered. Though they don't know why this nerve is triggered or what exactly causes it. Sorry I couldn't be more help. I sure hope your friend gets well!!!!

Thanks 2luvbugs4disney for your kind wishes. I'm sorry you suffer from vertigo too. I think I'm going to see my friend this week - we live several hundred miles apart so I don't get to see her that often. I'll let you know if I find out what her prognosis is.

One of the women where I work has suffered two episodes of Vertigo while in the office. The first was was really scary. I had left the office to pick up DD after school and when I returned they were loading her on a gurney and taking her to the hospital. She was out for another day or two. The second time, I happened to be chatting with her and it just all of a sudden hit her. Having gone through it she knew what was happening and she asked us to call her husband. They live an hour away, but fortunately one of the girls also lives in that area and was able to drive her home right away.

Hi...been suffering from episodes of it for over two years.

It started with a MAJOR episode in Feb. '01 where I couldn't even stand up...took about 3 or 4 days to get to the point where I could tolerate it. Worst part was boss was on vacation, so I had to go to work with it, with DH driving me 45 miles each way!

I went through a major battery of tests, MRI, etc and they couldn't find a cause. I tried three different meds with no success.

I usually find its worse when I haven't had enough sleep, when I try to look up over my head, and when I lay on my right side. I get the bed spins every night getting into bed. This week, I was trying to change a bubble blower display at work, stood on my tip toes and fell over due to a pretty severe flare up.

She may have to go through the MRI. Kinda hope it comes up negative, but then again, negative hasn't been that much fun here. I guess I'm the 1% that the scopalimine patch or the meclizine pill doesn't do anything for (except make me nauseous!)

Good luck to your friend. I hope it goes away.

Suzanne

Ok wait. I'm getting scared here. What kind of Doctors are at my Hospital!!!! They just told me it was vertigo, and didn't know why it happened. NO tests, NO nothing. It's not too severe (thank god) I get slightly dizzy from time to time. But nothing I can't truly handle. Hope it does not get worse as I age. (36 now)

I have it frequently due to my multiple sclerosis. The first episode was terrible and came on when my DD was 1 month old. Out of the blue. I thought I must have a brain tumor or something. Really scary. After this happened again, they sent me for tons of tests. I was told I had everything from an inner ear infection to "new mother nerves"

Well, finally after a year, the real diagnosis came in. I was thankful I wasn't crazy.:D

But anyway, here's what my neurologist told me the day I was diagnosed with MS. When it comes to any kind of dizziness (I have vertigo, osolopscia - which is the feeling of being on a rocking boat, and lightheadedness) - the WORST thing you can do is REST. Your brain needs to re-train itself to accept the dizziness as normal. The BEST thing you can do, and it seems impossible I know, is go on doing your normal things. Wash the dishes, fold the laundry, whatever - while you're experiencing the dizziness. Sounds insane, but it does work. I was desperate, so I tried it.

Now dizziness is just a normal part of my life. I can officially be called a "dizzy broad" and not be offended.;)

Good luck to her - she'll be okay.:D
