I was reading the Vero Adoration thread and it mentioned these creepy bugs that nothing will deter. :scared1: Also, the sand is so hot that it will be sure to burn our feet. :rotfl: Also mentioned :scared1: drop offs in the ocean that might be a problem with kids.....jelly fish and manowars!!! OH MY!!!!!

MAYBE WE WON'T BE GOING TO VERO!!!!!:scared1: :scared1:
FROM THREAD:

What is the beach like?
The beach is on the "wild" side, with lots of waves and a pretty sharp drop off. Children should be closely supervised.
Rob describes it here:
"It is not a big beach, but it is never crowded so size, in this case, doesn't matter. Vero beach is an ocean playground. The waves on most days are formiddable and great for boogie or surf boarding.

The sand is brown and coarse, and gets hot in the summer. For me the hot sand is a sensory awakening and I find myself thinking... "yes, I really am here... ouch, damn that's hot... ow, ow, ow".

I love the ocean waves. VB receives the gulf stream flow so the water temps are pretty steady for much of the year. I like to think that sharks don't like waves and stay out further than I venture. I have never seen a shark at VB, but PamOKW posted a story about a shark bite incident at VB in 2006. Thanks, Pam.

Jelly Fish? Hah.... VB has PORTUGESE MAN-O-WAR! Actually, I have been to VB almost all the months from March to November and only once have I encountered these slimey creatures of pain. Yes, I was stung. Not too bad though... just felt like a thousand bee stings.

Take what you hear with a ' grain of sand ' :rotfl: ( I know, awful joke ).

Definitely some excellent info & points made about VB here. But these situations apply to many, many beach destinations. Use caution when out there in the waves for sure & keep the kids close but don't be discouraged about VB.

Absolutely give it a try :thumbsup2

We think you & your family will find what may be bothersome to be relatively minor and all there is that is fantastic about it to be MAJOR !!

The no-see 'ums can be a nuisance but search around these boards and you will find suggestions on things that are successful in warding them off.

(Have to say, we really didn't have an issue with them; we've been to VB in August and put on Avon's Skin So Soft.)

I thought about this for a minute after I posted it. We stayed on the gulf side 2 summers ago in Aug. Sure it was hot....but it was not unbearable and we walked on the sand. SO I guess that shouldn't be a worry. Of course the gulf is mild as far as waves/currents go.

Pool is great; especially for the younger kids - fun play area.

Maybe for your first trip to VB try it out just for a night or two  so if you find you don't like it you are not stuck there for too long.

I love Vero Beach, but it's not for everyone. I've never stayed there in July but I have been there in Sept., Oct. April and May. The pool is lovely and always refreshing. The ocean is rough. I'm a New Englander and have spent my life going to the beach, I have been sailing most of my life and I feel that I'm fairly confident around the ocean, but I've also learned to respect it. I was there in Sept. of 2007 and the ocean was very rough. There is no Life Guard (why I don't know, there should be) and one of my friends got in trouble with a rip current. Luckily the towel attendant was available and helped him out. You have to be aware of this and personally, I'll always have some type of flotation available when I'm there, even if it's just a noodle. Also, if you have young kids you have to watch out for them. Remember, there is nothing between you and Europe but water there and the waves have a long way to build up. Even given that, I enjoy the beach and will go back for the beach. My wife is going back next week with some friends.

The sand does get hot, so bring sandals with you. The sand gets hot at a lot of beaches in the summer.

There are fish off shore of the beach and there are sharks around, along with lots of other game fish. If you see a large number of small fish around you, there may be bigger fish looking for a snack. Florida has lots of shark attacks, most of them are mimimal damage. Most of the attacks are mistakes, but mistakes hurt. I was told that most of the shark attacks on the treasure cost occur near the inlets when large schools of fish are drawn out with the outgoing tide. Surfers with their feet in the water are around and sometimes get bit. I was told that the danger zone was about 100 yards on each side of the inlet. The resort is a few miles from the inlet. I always enjoy being at the cocktail lounge and looking out at the ocean and seeing large schools of fish go by.

Vero is also a quiet resort with not a lot of activity for adults. When we were there with our late teen early 20's sons they were bored after 2 days. I've seen other familys also leave after a couple of days and go back to Disney. They do have a very active kids program. The resort is best for relaxing by the pool or ocean. There are many golf courses nearby and it's a great place for that (although golf in Florida in July is not fun). You will also have to drive to most restaurants, unless you want to only eat at the resort. There are many restaurants nearby in all price ranges. Cap't Hiram's is very Florida like and very casual just north of Vero Beach on Rt. 1.

All in all, Vero is a great resort and is on my list of yearly must do's.

THANKS SO MUCH. Well my two boys would concern me in that water. They are both strong swimmers but they are also "crazy" when it comes to the beach and I can see them going out too far and freaking me out too. I love the gulf. I wish Disney would build on the gulf side.

Stop it.... You're going. :)

I'm the Rob describing the beach. Scares you doesn't it? :rotfl:

Seriously though, it was a bit tongue in cheek. The sand will get hot in late July and August, but not so hot that you would get burned feet. Just wear your flops and you'll be fine.

I was stung once by a PMOW, but it actually wasn't as bad as a single bee sting. And once in ten years is pretty good.

Starbox had the first sentence about the wild waves and drop-off. I personally am depressed if the waves aren't big enough to ride, and on our last trip in June, there were NO waves 3 out of our 5 days (see evidence here). The drop-off is just a quick dip where the waves crash. It raises back up. it Just catches people off guard and they think it is going to get deeper as the go.

The No-see-ums bother some people. They are noticed mostly at dusk and dawn. Sometimes early to mid morning, or mid to late afternoon, or late morning to early afternoon. Kidding... maninly dusk & dawn. Seems to be generally agreed that Cutter Advanced and/or Avon repellents are most effective against them.

BTW (you may know this) you can edit you title. After you click edit click the "Go Advanced" button and it will let edit your title.

Anyway your going to have wonderful time. I promise

:rolleyes1

THANKS FOR THE TIP. I never knew you could edit titles. All these years on here and that was something I never knew. :thumbsup2

Well we won't know about Vero til we try right??!! Thanks for posting. I am sure we will go.

We went the first week of August this year. The main difference between Maryland in August and Florida in August is the humidity. Very, very humid, temps weren't too bad. Also, no seeums started very early in the am while we were on our porch. We're going back first week of Oct. '09. I think the humidity will be much better, and the noseeums as well. I would wear water shoes in the water,it is very "shelly" right there by the edge. I so loved the water and resort. Going to really explore the town of Vero Beach next trip!:goodvibes
