I'm assuming that the lack of specfic news about the Disney DVC property at VB is good news!

We can hope.. but the reality is they have let noone back onto the barrier islands until the government services declare it safe to travel there.

Some other post that were suposed to be on vacation this week there, said that MS called on Sunday and canceled the stays. I was supposed to be there on the 12th. I happened to change my ressie to HHI about 5 weeks ago. they also said that the DVC staff could not get back to the resort to look at damage.

There is another post with pics of the town of VB showing damage to bridges and roads. I guess these would have to fixed first before the resort can even be accessed by construction crews.

Well, we know what happens when you "assume."

Given the reports of specific hotels and restaraunts, even though there are conflicting reports about the ocean grill may not mean Vero DVC is OK. Damage to Eb and Flows, the community room, and other portions may not be evident from the street. Beach loss of 12-15 feet for the beach next door is certainly significant. However, if they notice that lifegaurd tower and boardwalk are destroyed, certainly you'd think it would be noticed if one of the beach cottages fell into the ocean. The beach access walkway couldn't have survived, it hasn't survived other storms.

Of course buildings can be rebuilt, glad to hear people are OK.

I'm waiting to see whether the "re-design" helped -- they withstood the surf of Charley that would have taken the old ones out. I kind of think the steps will be gone but it would be interesting if they survived.

The resort being closed can be due to several factors. For starters, Disney can't have guests coming into a resort that has no power or water and no timetable for when it will be restored. I also imagine there will be repairs needed that they may or may not have to complete before re-opening.

From what I've heard, the access bridges are structurally okay. I think there is flooding on A1A and it's possible it could be sand covered as well. They can't let people out there until they are sure the power lines are off the roads and that the roads are passable.

An additional problem is concern for looters. Another reason that have to be careful about who is going out there. There are very expensive homes and the power has knocked out the alarm systems. They have already arrested people in other sections of Florida.

It took a couple of days before some of the reports from Charley were coming in - more and more came in as people were allowed in further and further. I wouldn't assume anything yet.

I remember when the ice storm hit up North here in Jan 98. It was several days before the real stories behing the storm were known - the news keeps on dribbling it out. I would still rather be in an ice storm than in the floods that I'm seeing in these photos.

My heart is aching for the people of the state of Florida. This is just awful being hit with these two storms back to back.

And hopefully NOT back to back to back...(Ivan):(

I have got to think that after a storm like that hotels and other business's would have to be inspected prior to re-opening.

I lived in NJ in 78 when a huge Hurricane went by (with the eye 20 miles off shore). You cannot imagine the devastation to the beach (and if you know the beaches in NJ they are about 5 times bigger then those in VB).

I also think that those buildings propably got through it pretty well - they have stringent standards, and, it would not make sense for Disney to scrimp on building quality.

Oh well, hope to hear some news soon.
