Vero Beach at Labor Day weekend. The good, the bad, the ugly. Tell me about it.

I just booked three nights there in a studio through Orbitz for $153 a night, before taxes.

Cons: It will be hot. It will be really busy until Monday afternoon. You will most likely get hit with a pool closure due to lightening at least once (daily) during your stay.

Pros: DJ Joe! Watermelon eating contest (usually an annual event). The Beach! The Pool! The Recreation CMs. Slide Races. Sea Turtles (possibly seeing hatchlings!).

Finally - a bad day at DVBR is still an amazing day!

I've spent Labor Day week at DVBR almost every year since 2010 (went a week later last year) and I love it.

The only part I am worried about is how busy it will be, but I think it is the only time I will be able to go, work wise. Plus the rate I got on Orbitz was awesome!

Will it be competitive to rent the umbrellas on the beach or getting a chair by the pool? Any other helpful advice on dealing with heavy crowds?

From my experience, it is a good idea to get down to the pool early if you would like to sit/lounge in a shaded area. I usually get up and get dressed, make a delicious breakfast sandwich to pack up with some fresh fruit, yogurt and water, grab my kit, and head down to the pool to relax in the fresh air. I'm typically at my table or in the pool (maybe running to the beach for a quick dip in the ocean) all morning before making a quick trip up to the room to put together my lunch and adult beverages before heading back down to my pool deck perch.

For the beach, it definitely helps to get there early as there have been days when they've run out of umbrellas or lounge chairs. It used to be that you couldn't reserve a beach set up early, but in recent visits it seems that they may have held spots for folks who had rented the previous day and asked for the same set up the next day.

As far as dealing with a bigger crowd, I just try to treat others how I would like to be treated. After all, we're all there to have a good time. For me that means being aware that I'm not the only one in the pool so no splashing or roughhousing and not "reserving" a table and six lounge chairs with a bag of towels on the table and mismatched flipflops on the chairs when I don't actually intend to physically be at the pool for another 3 hours. I guess it boils down to demonstrating common sense and common courtesy, even if others may not be doing so.
