Vero Beach & Kennedy Space Center

I am sitting here planning my trip to DVC's Vero Beach resort which I have scheduled for July 29th through August 5th.

I am looking at some out-of-resort activities.

Has anyone ever done the trip to the Kennedy Space Center? I went in the 1970's so my memory is a little fuzzy. Good idea? Bad idea? Best days to go? Good for kids? Other suggestions?

We did this 2 years back in August. Drive time door to door is about 50 minutes. Funny last time I did it was in 1978 prior to that and things of course of changed dramatically.

Crowds weren't too bad.... One word of caution. My DD and DS were 8 and 7 and they were BORED STIFF. It was over there heads.

Get there at opening. Checkout the website. You can reserve certain events such as 'Lunch with an astronaut'-link above. I enjoyed it. Small kids might be bored.

My boys were 8 and 11 when we went in Dec. They had a great time, I was bored stiff. Don't get me wrong there are a lot of wonderful things to see and it is amazing to see the launch pad. I was just a bit, "Yeah, it's a rocket, just like that one over there!" Then my DH and DS's would tell me about the slight differences, etc.
Oh! One good thing, we went in to see where they put things together for the International Space station. I did love that!

We did this last year...

DS5 loved it... DD2 wasn't quite sure what to make of it...

We went during a day that there was supposed to be a launch and traffic was a bit heavier... It took us about 70 mins... The launch was scrubbed but we still had a good time..
