Vero Beach & Kennedy Space Center - split stay?

We have a reservation for a possible trip to the Orlando area in mid March for two nights in an Ocean View room at Vero Beach (first visit there!). We are also thinking of going to Kennedy Space Center as we have never been there. I am unsure if we will be able to reserve additional nights but could be put on a waitlist for Vero.

We are also debating on whether we should drive to Port Canaveral from Vero or just reserve a hotel in Cocoa Beach for a few nights. We do have Hilton points so the cost would be minimal.

Would appreciate any thoughts - thank you!

Several years ago we stayed at WDW a few nights, then drove to Kennedy Space Center and spent the day there. We were able to see what we wanted, take the tour, etc. and then had plenty of time to drive to VB and spend a couple of nights there. So I think it would be your decision. Cocoa Beach is a nice place to visit!
