Has anyone ever stayed at Vero Beach Resort and eaten at Shutter's or Sonya's ? Was the food good or would it be worthwhile to leave the resort and go somewhere else? Does anyone know any good restaurants in the area? :confused3
Sorry for all of the questions but I have never been to Vero Beach. I will be staying there in July for a couple of days.

Thanks! :goodvibes

Don't tell anyone I said this - we love the Vero Resort, but we don't care for the sit down restaurants. Food and service so so and too expensive. We like to go to Capt Hiram's in Sebastain or Mulligans, Ocean Grill, The Patio, etc. in Vero. :Pinkbounc

My kids enjoyed the burgers and fries at the pool. We did not eat at the resort restaurants. We opted for carry out from local eateries. The most memorable is Bono's Barbecue. My husband is the barbeque connoisseur and still raves about Bono's.

I am going to have to echo the sentiments about the restaurants being marginal. We ate at the "fancy restaurant", (I guess Sonya's) and the service was baaaaad - sweet dear of a waitress but not at the price (close to $200 for 2 adults 2 kids). I know there are many believers in the Disney beach Resorts but I just didn't feel the magic. Have fun

The best restaurant in Vero Beach is the venerable Ocean Grill right on the beach. It has somehow survived the recent hurricanes and is as funky and charming as ever. It's a bit pricy but well worth the effort and probably a 15 minute droive from Disney.

Capt. Hiram's is very fun, and another vote for Ocean Grill. Wasn't impressed with Sonya's.

The Ocean Grill is great, this brings back memories of my child hood, when we went to Florida we sent to Vero and always ate at the ocean grill. (1960's) When my DH and I married I took him to this restuarant. I am so glad it did not get blown away by the last storm. :sunny: Don't know if it is still there, but there used to be a sunken ship just out in the water and at low tide you could see the top of the pole. It was very interesting to think about that ship out there.

Thanks everyone !!!

I think I will pass on the Resort restaurants and try Cart. Hiram's and Ocean Grill. They sound really good !!!

Well, we actually LIKE Shutters and eat there every night when we go. They have a couple things on the menu that I get every time - I really look forward to being to get them. And they have a chef's special every night - they always look so tempting.

We ate at Shutter's twice for dinner and once for breakfast and Sonya's once for dinner. We LOVED Shutter's, but the food at Sonya's wasn't good in our opinion.

Thanks for posting this! I am going to be there for a whole week in early July and definately need to educate myself about the dining options. I am totally unfamiliar with the area so I love to hear the suggestions about local spots
:wave2:

Another vote for Cpt Hiriam's. The Ocean Grill was good but not great. Shutters is okay, the grapefruit chicken was good and the chef was kind enough by request to prepare 2 amaretto cheesecakes. We had had them a few years before at Sonya's and they were no longer on the menu. We generally do Shutters once per trip and enjoy the meal. We have tried Sonya's several times. The seafood buffet is a complete waste of money, the quality and selection lacks alot to be desired.

Our boys will also grab something quick a few times during the trip from the pool bar, burgers, hot dogs....This is standard Disney fastfood...not for adult consumption.

We liked Shutters, food was good and it was relaxing.
Capt Hirams is a fun place.
At the resort they have a book with all restaurants in the area.

we did the character breakfast and a dinner at the restaurant in the hotel. both were very good. We ate at a seafood place in town, but I don't remember what it was called. It was indoors, but felt like you were on a dock. It was good food though. If it's still there, you have to stop at a little convenience store down the road from the resort called Boppy's. they sell shrunken heads! Yes, you read that right! We stopped to buy some beer to take back to the room and they had a display case with shrunken heads in it! So funny :rotfl2:

I forgot to mention that we have had very good carryout from Orchid Isle Pizza just north of the resort. We also think that Bleachers has very good food. :Pinkbounc

Well, we live in Vero. And we like to go to shutters and have the conch fritters, lol. Captain Hirams is ok, we love ocean grill. The Black Pearl is also really good. Bonos is good bbq and dh loves their hot shrimp, like wings, only shrimp. Mr. Manatees, is very casual, but good and fun. And not seafood, but my favorite is Saigon Bistro, a very good vietnamese place.

We went to VB for two nights last May and ate at Shutters and Capt. Hiram's Sand Bar. We enjoyed our dinner at Shutters and thought the food was very good but the service was a little strange. Like misplaced professional waitresses. I had a fish dish and DH had a veggie flatbread. We also had a lot fun at Capt. Hiram. OK I have to admit we mainly drank some rum punches, sat with our feet in the sand, watched the ocean and ate a little bit of bar food ....but they were great rum punches (no disney drinks here!). Just make sure everyone understands, we did not eat in the dining room but in their outside bar area, which really cool.

We are going to VB in a week or so and would love some more suggestions. I have heard people suggesting...
Ocean Grill
Capt. Hirams
Charlie and Jake's
Mulligans
Squid Lips
