Unless something has changed in the last 12 months (bought my phone almost a year ago exactly), you can buy a phone from Verizon outright.
I was supposed to be grandfathered in too, but we all know what happened with that. I do have a limited data plan for my house and I use my phone A LOT, so I refuse to give up my unlimited plan.
I walked in and told them I was not interested in a contract and was only buying a phone outright. They did everything they could to talk me out of it (probably because they could see how much data I use!), but I refused to budge. I spent over $500 for a phone that a contract would have made SO MUCH more affordable and I don't regret it at all!!
If you go in and let them know right of the bat, that you are NOT interested and will NOT buy a phone with a contract, you should be able to get one......UNLESS, something has changed in the past 12 months!

How on earth do the cell companies get the nerve to charge people $1000+ for a phone. Outrageous.
