Verizon service in the Bahamas

We leave for our first Disney cruise in 3 weeks, and I was just looking at Verizon options to be able to send a couple of texts and check work email.

Verizon has a $10 per day Bahamas plan that should be perfect. However, does anyone know if this will work on the ship while it is docked in port at Nassau and/or Castaway Cay? We may not do much in Nassau, so I was wondering if the plan would work while on board.

Thanks!

I might suggest popping off the ship in Nassau, find a place with wi-fi and check in from there. Pirate Republic Brewing is a local brewery right near the ship that has free wi-fi for customers but there are plenty of places like that around the area.

I have good luck with Verizon in most ports when I use any of their plan. However the service only seems to work from my balcony while docked. I will say that we cruise every year and if you are aiming for checking emails and texts and not concerned as much with making a phone call then you might consider one of disneys new packages. Their wifi seems to have come down in price. If you turn off all your app updates beforehand boarding an s only turn on the email and texts when you want them I was able to update a couple times a day. On the first day only of the cruise they allow you a certain amount for free. So I do that and do a download that first morning.

If it's a phone call you are wanting to make you would need the Verizon plan. Are you sure Bahamas aren't but included with Verizon. For some reason I thought they were.

My understand and experience thus far is that when the ship is docked, the ship WiFi still works but the ship cellular is turned off. Even on board the ship I was seeing the Bahamas signal on my cell. I also noticed the $10 promotion but I noticed it too late to do anything about it. I used to leave my phone in airplane mode the entire trip but I've learned that if you turn off cellular data roaming on your phone (they all have it) you can leave your phone on for those emergency calls or text messages from back home. On Verizon the text messaging is five cents to receive a text and fifty cents to send one. Calls are a bit expensive but don't cost you anything if you don't answer your phone. The high cost is for cellular data.

I just used it last week in Nassau, it worked great. Turned it on as soon as we docked and connected to the local 4g network. I used it on and off the ship and it worked fine everywhere. It would occasionally kick me off 4g but it would come back right away. It was fast and I was able to use all my apps including snapchat and Instagram. I didn't make any calls but my mom did and she said it was fine. It was great to have access down there and I flew for 10 bucks it was worth it.

Yes to both questions. It may or may not work from your stateroom while docked (or when the ship is near the shore), depending on what type of room you have and which direction it faces.
