Just wanted to say THANKS to the fellow Dis boards members who said the $14.95 DSL was a great deal.

I just downgraded from the $29.99 DSL package and I can barely notice the difference. I have been playing games, downloading music and surfing the Internet just to see the difference and it is BARLEY noticable. It took maybe an extra 30 seconds to download a song- but everything else seems the same to me. I hope it stays cheap after the annual contract expires.

I'm glad to hear this information! I just signed up for this package and received my equipment in the mail today. I can't wait to surf faster!

:cool1:

how much slower is dsl than a cable modem? I want to spend less money, but hubby needs (wants) speed. We're looking into FIOS right now, but that doesn;t look like it will save me much.

The $14.95 package is considerably slower than the regular DSL for the types of stuff I use it for. They gave me actual d/l times (mb/minute), and after having cable, I'd go nuts LOL. Still, for those with only dial up, it's a great step up.

DSL speeds are based on the quality of the lines and your proximity to the phone company's server. I am about 2 blocks from the phone companys substaion and my DSL is actually faster than my neighbors cable connection

Cheap Mom:

I was thinking of doing the same thing. When I called Verizon, the guy talked me out of it saying that it was much slower than what I have(DSL). I don't really download much, usually only use it to surf the net.

Any other users of the $14.95 version??? It could save me $$ to do the switch.

TIA

Helene

Helene- this is DSL. The speed is 768 Kbps/128 Kbps
I had the $29.99 DSL which is 3 Mbps/768Kbps and downgraded to the above. For me it is a non issue. I am going just as fast as I was before. And I didn't have to do a thing- I just called and asked and the girl on the line said hold a moment- came back about 2 minutes later and said my connection had been downgraded- my billing info has been updated. I didn't need to do anything to my computer at all.
A friend of mine who lives in a townhouse development has cable and it is slower than to this DSL. She said that it is because so many people are using the same cable connection. But my cable modem at work was faster than DSL.

Cheap mom,

Thanks for the reassurance. In that same conversation the rep also talked me out of dropping the long distance from my service. I figured I could save @ $35/month by downgrading my DSL & using my cell for long distance.

I am going to call Verizon today and ask for the downgrades. Thanks again for your input! :sunny:

Helene,
When I called Verizon to downgrade, the guy also tried to talk me out of it. But he did tell me a way to check my current speed. Go to this link and check your current speed:

http://infospeed.verizon.net/

the $29.99 plan is suppose to be at 3mbps but I was only getting a little over 1mbps so it was a no brainer for me to go down to the 768kbps plan. I have not notice any major slowness.

spoon2003,

I am curious. I downgraded my service but the speed test still shows my speed at 1 MB. So I am worried have the downgraded me or is the extra speed a freebie?

This is probably a stupid question...do you need a working land line for DSL? I only have my cell, not phone to the house.

They prob did downgrade if that's what it is. My road runner cable is 5 mb d/l. I just checked it. And I complain that that is too slow LOL.

BTW - this Verizon service is NOT available in all areas - :confused3

Thank you Spoon2003 for the speed link!!! I just checked mine and it is not even at the 768kb and I pay 29.99 for the faster service!!!! I am calling to downgrade right now!!!

I have the $14.95 DSL and it is just as fast if not faster than our T1 line here at work.....

(out in Frederick even if we had the $29.95 it would not be any faster so this works great for us)

Oh and we got a wireless modem from them......It worked fine for 2 months and then crapped out on us....They were prompt in sending a new one to us at no additional charge. Works fine now.....
