Verizon doing away with unlimited data

I have an iPhone 4G with AT&T and I have unlimited data, as I have had my plan for several years. When AT&T discontinued their unlimited data plan, those of us who had this plan were grandfathered in and still have it. I would guess Verizon will do the same for their users.

ok, fine, I just want it to play Angry Birds

AT&T did the same thing last year - and the only way you still have unlimited data is if you had it before and were grandfathered in.

Luckily we were.

It stinks now that technology is finally taking off, and becoming something that really is a benefit in daily life - companies decide that now that everyone is 'hooked' on wireless data access - it's time to limit the flow of data.

I'm wondering how long they will continue to 'grandfather' us!

I was upset when AT&T did the same. After I started paying attention to how much data I was using I actually changed my unlimited data plan to a 200mb/month plan. I was way overspending keeping the unlimited! I was paying $30/month for unlimited and for 15 months had only gone over 200mb once. So I switched to the 200mb for $15/month. If I happen to go over then they just bump me up to the next tier(400mb) for an additional $15. That hasn't happened yet!

Lucky you. We got grandfathered into ATT unlimited and our avg usage per month is about 12-15 GB's a phone. Netflix and hulu use a ton of bandwidth. If I was using so little data Id prolly question if I really needed it.

I have an iPhone with AT&T and was grandfathered in with the unlimited data. The thing that I like about AT&T is that when I get a new phone it just renews my contract for another 2 years. My current plan is no longer available but I can keep that.

When i was with Verizon i would have to switch plans as well. Because of that I wonder if Verizon will continue to grandfather folks into the unlimited plan.

It helps that we have Wi Fi at work so I just connect to that. I don't commute or travel often, so I don't use it all the time. I don't watch videos on my phone either, just YouTube and I make sure I have Wi Fi when I do.

You have to have a data plan when you have a smart phone. It's required. And I'd definitely rather have the 200mb plan for $15 than get bombarded with a high bill and no plan. It's not hard to limit yourself with the use and I don't even feel limited. 6 days to go til our monthly billing ends and I still have 85mb to go.

My niece's husband works at our Verizon store and he said my unlimited plan will stay as long as I don't change anything on my plan. He says changing the phone is fine, just not the plan.

I don't use a bunch of data right at the moment (around 500MB) but I plan on getting an iPhone next year when I can upgrade and it has a Netflix app that I will probably be using a bunch.

I think your fine as long as you don't stream. I use a ton of data on my Verizon, but I stream Pandora all day at work..now I know I'm not changing my plan I cant afford to lose my tunes :)

So when I upgrade from my Droid in April to an Iphone - I won't be able to keep my unlimited data plan?

I can't speak for Verizon, but with AT&T as long as you keep a smart phone (no matter what kind) you can keep your unlimited data plan. Maybe Verizon will do the same.

It has nothing to do with how "hooked" people are, it has to do with how much bandwith is being used. The companies can't keep up.

Heya-
If you're worried about your usage (going over allotted data usage or texting usage), there are also free apps you can download from app stores that will track your usage and let you know when you're going over whatever setting you want (a certain amount of minutes, a certain amount of data, etc.) and will display it on your screen. I have it for my Droid X, and my friend has a similar one for her iPhone...
