Does Verizon work in Vancouver & Alaska or do you have to purchase a special plan from Verizon?

We did an Alaska cruise in 2014. At that time there was no extra charge for Alaska, but depending on where we were the service could be a little weak. Vancouver was a different story. We took the train up from Seattle and made sure to put our phones on airplane mode before we crossed the Canadian border and kept them that way until we were in Alaska.

Depends on your plan. In the US (Alaska) it should be fine, but, as noted, the signal can sometimes be weak.

Vancouver is not US, so your plan may (with extra cost) or may not cover it.

Verizon has TravelPass which lets you use your phone for calls/text/data as if you were at home for a flat daily rate. For Canada and Mexico the rate is $5/day (not sure if that is per device or per account). You can set it up online or through the Verizon app.

We have one of Verizon’s unlimited plans, and Canada and Mexico are included at no extra charge. We had excellent coverage in Vancouver and good coverage in town in Alaska but not when we were away from town on excursions. This was on the Sept. 4-11 Alaska cruise this year. There was no setup required, just got a message when we got to Vancouver “welcome to Canada! Your plan includes Canada at no extra charge!”

I'd read about that but Verizon's FAQ about it doesn't address how it's charged (per device or account.) Quick chat with Verizon customer service said, "As per checking the Travel Pass. Yes, it is charged per device or line."

The Travel Pass worked great for us in Vancouver. Since Alaska is in the US nothing is needed in the other ports and you'll be on your local plan. One thing to note is Travel Pass is $5 for a 24 hour period. So if you don't manage closely you could end up paying for time you won't use.

I have Verizon. We were on the Alaska cruise in June. My phone worked as normal in Vancouver and in AK. I also got the "welcome to Canada" message. I didn't have to pay anything extra. I haven't heard about any Travel Plan.

I think Travel Pass is for accounts that don’t have unlimited data. It’s a good deal if you need to stay connected.
