Verifying an owner?

I'm looking at few different places - renting privately through the owner. I've narrowed it down to three choices. Of course you are taking a leap of faith just like they are taking a leap of faith on you, however the more security one can have the better At one point I came across a post talking about checking a tax registry of some sort but I can't find the post anymore. Does anybody know the site you can go to to verify the owner does indeed own the property they say they do?

Each county has a different site. This is the one for Kissimmee, Osceola County:
http://ira.property-appraiser.org/ Just do a basic search using their last name first.
For Davenport, Polk County use this: http://polkpa.org/CamaDisplay.aspx

It takes a few months for a property to be put online so if it's a new property it may not be listed yet.

If the home is in Kissimmee it may be showing under Osceola County. Another check you can do is by asking for their management company details and giving them a call to verify ownership and that they do actually manage the property
