Venting about a new carpet with problems already!

We just got a carpet in our attic bedroom on Feb 2nd of this year. After 3 and 1/2 months I saw a problem! There was shedding, which you expect in a new carpet. But my complaint is that there are thin "threads," if you will, arising about an inch or more from the surface of the the carpet. Not the pile itself, just individual strands, as thin as a human hair. Well the shed fibers get tangled in these strands and don't vacuum up. The result is "balls" in the high traffic areas, similar to the "pilling" that occurs on some garments that contain polyester.
The carpet looks worn because these strands lay flat accross the surface and cause a matting effect.
I called the flooring company where we purchased the carpet. They promised to contact Mohawk, the manufacturer. Long story short, I've been getting the run-around since I first called in the last week in May!
At this point I'm really getting peeved! I don't WANT to face the possibility of replacing the carpet (with moving all the furniture, etc. out of the attic!) so I wouldn't complain if I didn't really feel that the carpet is faulty. When you lay down a scrap that I saved next to a traffic area it doesn't even look like the same carpet! It looks older than a 15 yr old carpet I have in another room!
We didn't go cheap when we picked out the carpet. We went middle of the road, not the most expensive, not the cheapest. We were told that it was perfectly fine for a 3rd floor bedroom. Honestly, it's just my two boys up there and they NEVER have shoes on.

Has anyone actually had a carpet replaced under warranty? I'm afraid Mohawk's inspector will tell me that it looks fine to him just so they don't have to honor my warranty!

If you can get them to come out and look at it, then get anything out of the room thatthey can claim damaged the carpet. If you have a dog, hide him. If they kids have toys in the room like trucks, beyblades, anything that could ruin the carpet, move them to another room.

All it takes is for them to see anything that could do that to your carpet, and they will deny it was their fault.

Wow! That stinks! We are currently replacing our master bedroom carpet under the warranty because of an ink stain that cannot be removed. The Dupont people have been helpful, but we did have to go through them and follow their steps before we could replace it. My one gripe is that when we purchased the carpet we carpeted the entire upstairs in the same carpet. We were told that the warranty would replace any carpet that is continuous--meaning the entire upstairs. Now they back-pedaled and will only replace the carpet in the master bedroom. Luckily, they still make the same carpet, but it may be a different dye lot so it may look different. We'll see.

Keep on it and follow all their directions. They should honor the warranty, even if it may be a subjective wearing as you stated. Good luck! I also recommend that you document your phone calls to them.

Thanks for the replies and good advice!

My DS 15 does have some guitar equipment (amp, pedals, cords) but they are not near the problems areas and he didn't have them yet when the problem started. I'll move them out before the inspector comes just to be on the safe side.

As someone who did her whole house in June, I wouldn't let up. That would be so irritating.
Better check your guarantees to the letter that is for sure!

Good Luck!
