:headache::furious: I bought a Lexar 8GB memory card for my new camera at Office Depot at the first of may. It was on sale at a very good price. Well I went to download pictures off the card and the card will not show up on my Gateway laptop or DH's desk top. We are trying to figure out how to get pics off the card. He says its not compatiable with our computers and we will have to buy some kind of card reader.

Do you have the software installed that came with your camera? (If it came with any?).

The way mine is set up is I connect the camera via usb cable and the program transfers the images while the card is still in the camera.

Maybe that could be a workaround for you?

Or even if there is no software you could connect the camera and see if you can path to it in windows explorer? It should show up as a new drive. (I think).

one thought.....Hubby suggests going to Lexar's website to see if they have a downloadable driver so your computer can communicate with the card.

another thought....Did you format the card before using it?

third thought...if nothing else works, get a (hubby says $20) card reader from Lexar.

Last minute "wait a minute"....hubby says 8GB is HDSC, not a normal SD card, and the normal "reader" in your computer probably can't communicate with it. In that case, you'd definitely need to get a card reader that reads high capacity cards.

But he still suggests checking the Lexar site in case they have a driver that works for your situation.

Save your money. Most card readers (older type) will not work with large capacity cards like this. Your digital camera should have come with USB cable. You can transfer picks to your PC this way without any problems.

.

HDSC cards generally require a USB 2.0 reader. You can get one fairly cheap (less than $20 at most) pretty much anywhere. Your built in readier is most likely a USB 1.0 or similar and will not read HDSC cards.

I personally would buy the card reader. Using the cable to download your pictures can frequently cause you to lose the images. A card reader is cheap enough and is faster than downloading them from the camera.

PP are correct. Old readers won't work with the new HD cards, it's not a brand issue, it's a size of card issue. When the HD cards first came out cards were freqeuently bundled with a reader.

I'd spend the $10-$20 for a reader, use the cable if want to be able to D/L your pictures before you purchase the reader or while you're waiting for delivery.

thanks all I will let DH know. I am not sure what all he tried last night.

Read the comments. It looks like the reader is slow and has issues with some brands/speeds of memory cards. $3.10 shipped is very cheap. Sometimes you get what you pay for. Probably a good choice for an extra reader.

I thought I had the same thing happen. Come to find out, I just needed to download a driver. My Windows Vista would not read it. I went to their website and downloaded what I needed for free. It would initially not read my memory card because it was too large. I panicked when I did not think I could retireve all my Disney pics.
