My b-day is this month, and with merging of various facilities, there are a bunch of b-days this month. Two co-workers who I eat lunch with also have June b-days, so we are "combining together" to do treats 1 day instead of each doing something on our specific b-day.

Our thought was to get 4 or 5 pies from Baker's Square, since I did pies last year, and one of my lunch buddies did that too on her b-day. (And I can't accuse her of copying me, since she was off on my b-day last year.:lmao:)

A different coworker overheard us planning...and asked that we bring in something "healthy" in addition to the treats.:rotfl: NOPE - not happening on my b-day treat. There are 8 b-days out of 28 people in our department with the b-days in June.

When the b-day treats come in, I can make a choice to eat them, or not. I do not "request" a b-day person to bring in something that totally suits my personal agenda.

OK - just needed to get that off my chest...

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: LOL! I'd be guffawing if a co-worker suggested that to me. But after I wiped the tears from my eyes, I'd probably suggest that if she wanted a healthy alternative then nothing was stopping her from bringing it in herself.

I agree with you: everyone has the choice whether or not to eat food brought in by co-workers. It is not a restaurant and no one is under any obligation to provide healthy food for a co-worker.

So you bring in treats on your own birthday? Shouldn't they be brining in the treats as a gift to you :confused3 It's your bday if you are buying the snacks than bring what you want!

I guess the co-worker made the assumption that people use their b-day as a scheduled time to do something tangible to show their appreceiation to co-workers ........from that frame asking for what would make her feel special makes every sense.
From your response she obviously misread your motivation.

Pies can be quite healthy; depending on what they're filled with!

I would have told said co-worker that she's more than welcome to bring in whatever she deems healthy (then mumbled she should mind her own business).

Sort of reminds me of my friend's sister, who asks what food will be at a family party, and when told "baked ziti, and hot dogs for the kids", says "can you make something else? My kids don't eat either of those!"....

Um, sorry...if you don't want what is being served, don't eat, or eat at home!

That's funny. :rotfl:

At all the places I've worked the non birthday co-workers always chipped in and brought something in for the birthday person/people.

I'd have laughed it off and told her one of the pies would be a fruit pie and fruit is healthy.

Happy Birthday!

Good for you, saying no to her "request." :thumbsup2

Her "request" was just plain rude. If she wants something "healthy" she should bring it herself. But "everything in moderation", couldn't she have a tiny sliver of a piece of pie? :confused3

Well, any idea what types of pies you might be bringing in as a gift to your co-workers in honor of your own birthdays? :rotfl2: I've never heard of Baker's Square, but I'm assuming they're great?

Apple pie: bring an apple
Banana cream pie: bring a banana
Chocolate cream pie: bring a small piece of dark chocolate
Strawberry rhubarb pie: bring a few stra.. oh, heck no - bring an uncut rhubarb ;)

Appease the 'healthy eating faction.

Never mind. Ignore me. She's being a selfish jerk.

Bakers Sqaure has amazing pies. And I like your idea.

That's too funny, my best friend's bday was on Friday and I asked her if her office got her a cake. She said not this year because everyone (except for her) is on a diet! I said geez, they could have at least gotten her a cupcake or something!!

I've never worked in an office were the birthday people bring in their own birthday treats. But no matter who's bringing them, no one else has the right to request what is brought. Let Ms. Nosypants bring her own healthy treats!

Where I work, someone else brings in the goodies for the b-day person. However my DH works for public works and every year I send him in with icecream cone cupcakes on his birthday (like I did for the kids when they were little). Nothing like watching a bunch of grown men walking around with cupcakes. There are a few however that start asking at the begining of the month if I am baking.

So I guess depending on the office, some people might just bring in their own goodies.

With that said my birthday is next friday and we will have to see if anyone remembers.

I'm a big fan of the birthday person bringing the treat into work. One of my previous offices always did this and it works so well. In some of the other places I've worked there have been less successful ways of handling birthdays and this way is really the fairest. :thumbsup2

It's your birthday, your choice of dessert. Period! Anyone who doesn't like it is free to eat their artichokes or whatever at their desk!!

I've never heard of it, but I like it too.

And while it's totally your right to not bring in some apples, or something like that...I likely would have. DH has blood sugar issues, and he controls them entirely with diet. He has gotten SO tired of people bringing in ONLY junk he chooses not to eat...Oh great it's a treat day, how fabulous, I'll just stay here at my desk blah blah blah... I figure it would be nice to have a tiny something for the ONE person who wanted or even needed something different. After all, it's a treat day...and it's not fun when you can't or choose not to (b/c there's nothing "OK") participate in the "treat".

I've always been a fan of bringing in your own goodies on your own birthday. That way you KNOW you'll get a slice of the kind of cake or pie you like. It also helps out those people who are on the serious sugar-free kick or who can't tolerate sweets. They know they'll be having somthing healthy on their birthday.

In addition, those people who always partake but NEVER contribute to a community pot-luck (and there's always at least one at every workplace) will be obligated to contribute at least once a year even if it's just a package of store-bought cookies.

If you must have goodie days or potlucks at your workplace, this really IS the most fair way of doing it.

OH please- he is an adult, he can do like they do at the school for kids that can't eat peanuts, dairy, gluton or whatever---they keep a stash of snacks on hand to have when others bring in something they can't eat. If a child can do that then an adult certainly can!!

I would probably plan on one no sugar added pie, but that is just because I try to be inclusive. I'd hate for someone to feel left out b/c I only brought in sugary snacks.
