Vent and likely a debate

profanity is just a way for an inmature person to voice thier opinons .. they really need to read the dictionary and broaden their vocabulary.
i am on your side.. disgusting

I have heard opposing opinions on that. Some say it is, some say that it's an urban legend of sorts.
 You're correct.

Oh, what the heck...I'll chime in!

I do not think profanity is the way an uneducated person expresses him/herself. I have a college degree, in English, no less, and sometimes a well placed "#^$*$#$&%" is the most appropriate word choice there is.

Now, if profanity is the ONLY way one is able to express him/herself, then yes, that is ignorance.

I'm not a fan of bumperstickers, profane or not. Most of them, regardless of the wording, just say to me: "I have so little respect for my possessions that I like to destroy them with goopy, sticky adhesive." ;) But that's just me, YMMV.

I saw one the other day that said, "Jesus loves you. (and in smaller print) But everybody else thinks you're an *******." I'm glad my kids didn't see that one.
I'm sorry, but that's funny. Of course I don't have a problem with swear words overall. I have been told I could put a sailor to shame when it comes to that. Not exactly something I'm proud of but we all have bad habits. I don't drink alcohol or coffee, don't smoke, don't do drugs, don't gamble, don't lie patholgically, don't worship the devil, etc but I can curse up a storm.

However, having said that, I wouldn't put something with a swear word in it on my car or wear it on a tee. Not sure why. It's not like it's something my kids haven't heard before. Guess it's just not something I would do. I try to keep my swearing to myself.

I agree completely. Just because you have the "RIGHT" to do something, doesn't always mean you should.

Absolutely! That is such LOW class. Have your opinions, fine! But, to have other people, esp KIDS read that is totally out of line.

One can make their opinions know without using the F word. Once the F word is used it severly lowers my opinion of the comment and person who said/wrote it.

What makes the F word worse than other words? It's just a word. :confused3

Do you have children? Is it OK with you if they go around saying the F word? If it's not OK with you, why not?

(And "well they don't say it" is not an answer - is it OK with you IF they do?)

It had some bumper stickers that I dont agree with but hey thats her right to have them. I drew the line though at the one that said, all spelled out, "F" Bush.

What I find amusing are the cars that have these "F" Bush and other vitriolic, crude stickers on one side and then the "Mean People Suck", "Hate is not a Family Value", and "Random Acts of Kindness" stickers on the other side. :rotfl2: Talk about hypocrites!

The Bush Haters have gone insane.

Did you have the same reaction when bumper stickers appeared in the 90's with the word "Bush" replaced with "Clinton"?

I do have a DD14 and DS13 from DH's first marriage. I know they have potty mouths, but they respect us enough not to say it around us. Their mom doesn't seem to care, and it's not a battle we choose to fight.

But what I really meant is that the F word seems to be so much worse than other curse words in some peoples' eyes and I wonder why. That's all. :) I guess my question is how did the F word get elevated as one of the worst words?

Well, I'm one that definately THINKS it, and occasionally even SAYS it (depending on the company I'm in) . . . but I wouldn't put it on a bumper sticker. I just think it's pretty tacky and classless to have that particular word on your car for everyone to read. Yes, it's just a word - but it's a word that isn't appropriate for all people and all situations, so I wouldn't put it on my car. No matter how much you might claim it's just a word, language is a powerful thing and certain words DO have certain stigmas. (Do you teach your 1 year old to say "bottom" or "***"?) For what it's worth, I also think those stupid stickers with that kid (who looks like Calvin) peeing on things are totally hideous and tacky.

I am not saying that the bumpersticker was appropriate. Again, I am curious how words get to be what they are. That's all. I am trying to be gifted and think outside the box. :lmao:

Because it relates to **GASP** sex! ;)

No matter how much better the US is, it's still be embarrasing how hung up the majority of Americans are on swearing and sex. :rolleyes1

Like it or not the 'F' word is something your kids will see written, or will hear probably quite often. I personally don't do bumper stickers, but let us not be so dramatic in thinking that seeing the word will in some way damage your child. Also, let us not be so sanctimonious as to suggest that people who swear are terrrible, class-less people.

ITA.

I dunno about this... when VP Cheney dropped the F-bomb on Sen. Leahy on the Senate floor, that was considered to be pretty terrible and class-less.

I wouldn't say that about people who swear. I've been known to throw out an "F Word" or two when the situation warrents and the company is acceptable. But I probably would say it about people who have that sort of language on a bumper sticker. (The classless part, not the terrible part.)

Here is the dictionary definition of "class", as it pertains to this particular usage -

Class: Elegance of style, taste, and manner, having a certain quiet grace

I would pretty much say that would exclude anyone who would drive around with the "F Word" displayed on their vehicle. Wouldn't you?

My office mate was reading this thread with me and commented that she saw this bumpersticker:

I'd rather have a president who scre*** his intern, than one that **rewed his country.

Different word, but basically the same meaning. But society deems this word a coupld of levels up on the vulgar scale. (And the bumper sticker is basically the same sentiments - anti-bush). So, just curious, is this word any more acceptable?

Thank-you. As I said in my earlier post I swear alot but I don't think it makes me "terrible or class-less".
My kids are clean, dressed well, and occasionally downright polite, my house is tidy, I bathe daily and dress nice for a SAHM, I really look very respectable/conservative/Suzy homemaker-ish/boring (LOL) until you get to know me and only then will I let the swearing begin. It's a bad habit. Sorry. I don't think it makes me terrible. No one else has bad habits?

But since I wouldn't put it on my car or tee maybe that raises me up a little? :confused3
