Vent! Am I the only one....?

Wow, I want to say, I am probably your pet peeve..
I am horrible about proper grammer and do miss spell words.
I blame it on my parents- both never graduated, but I try to learn each day. ( looking back I wished I would of cared more, & would of changed a lot) When I was in school my parents could of cared less on what I did educational. Now that I am a parent fo four, I care very muh about the education and what they learn. My hope in life that my kids are twice as smart as I am.. I can see that already, and I tell my kids, I want that of them.

Now I'll be very paranoid about what I type here.

My Dh bless his heart- is an QA manager - and that is what he does all day long. Checking emails that go out to customers, listen to the phone wav. So if I have to email or write something that is VERY important I do have him proof read it for me.

But on the boards, I generally just type away. I'm not anyones buddy on the boards, but I do enjoy reading the post(s).

Linda,

Just keep posting. The vast majority of people do not care.

I consider you my buddy, Linda, and do enjoy your posts also. Happy and Healthy '04 to you and your family.

Spelling, grammar, and word misuse(their/they're) type of things do jump out at me but I don't really care.

The thing that bothers me the most is when people type all in lower case with no punctuation at all and use things like "U" instead of "you". I just scroll past their posts because I can't stand to read them.

Another thing that bugs me almost as much is when folks write something really long all in one paragraph. I'd rather they break it up for me. It's easier to read.

I have to work hard at not letting spelling and grammar errors bother me. I'm not always successful -- sometimes I just can't get past all the extra apostrophes in plural nouns and misusage of simple works like "their" and "there."

DocRafiki and ToriLammy -- Quotation marks go AFTER the period or comma. "This is the correct way to punctuate the sentence."

I thought the question was about () parentheses not quotation marks  I thought the poster used the ")" to make the point she was talking about parentheses.

Rule 3. Periods go inside parentheses only if an entire sentence is inside the parentheses.

Thanks Dan.. You can always put a smile on a face:D

Thanks Lanshark & Nick@ VB+OKW

ToriLammy -- I misread the question. Silly me.:D

Why don't people use the edit button and correct those typos?

Well THAT I didn't know. I had the feeling it was always outside the parentheses.

See, Buckleybunch? It's never too late to learn.

Here's a tip... "could of," "would of," "should of" --
If you hear people saying this, they're really saying "could've," which is a contraction (though I don't think it's proper) of "could have."

These are correct...
could have
should have
would have

Maybe someone can start a daily language lesson, like Deb's old "this day in history." What ever happened to that?

{check me out. i made use of that "edit" button, too.}

If I let little things like typos bother me I could never come to this board....mostly because everything would bother me. I try to not sweat the small stuff.

One of my friends and I talk on Yahoo Messenger sometimes and I swear he runs words together and doesn't capitalize anything, but it doesn't make me like him any less. Example: "im going tobed now."

Ok, heres one that I never know which is the proper way to write it, so maybe someone can help me here. When talking about something you did in the past is it "used to" or "use to"?

Found on a Grammar website:

The common expressions supposed to meaning "meant to" or "intended to" and used to meaning "formerly" are frequently misspelled or misunderstood.

Both expression are normally in the Passive Voice. This means that the verb is the past participle so it ends with an -ed. Writers sometimes drop the final d because of the t sound which follows it.

Incorrect: We are suppose to meet at seven.

Correct: We are supposed to meet at seven.

Incorrect: I use to read every Hardy Boys book I could find.

Correct: I used to read every Hardy Boys book I could find.

I always do, but I'm an English teacher...

The one mistake that I hate the most: "alot"

"A lot" is two words not one.

I have always wanted to petition someone to have 'a lot' mean a parcel of land and..... 'alot' to mean a large amount...

Any clues on who to contact to get this official?

Alot? A lot?

From the same grammar mistakes website:

A Lot or Allot ?

A lot (two words) is an informal phrase meaning "many." It can take an adjective, for example, "a sizeable lot."

Example: Karl needed a lot of time for the job.

Allot means "to distribute between or among." It has the same root as lottery.

Example: He allotted three breaks a day to everyone in the department.

Alot does not exist as a word.

Speaking of the edit button, why don't we get the little messages on the bottom of the post that say we edited?

As for instant messaging, I am WAY more lenient. After all, it's not a permanent record unless someone saves it or prints it. My typing is SO bad with my new laptop that it just gets annoying to go back and correct every little typo when I'm chatting with someone (and I often do this for hours). I frequently miss the space bar now for some reason. But, I generally will mimic the style of the person I'm typing to. If they're lenient, I become much more lenient.
