So, DH works tomorrow night. I do not think that not being with him on Valentine's night is the end of the world, but I did want to enjoy a nice brunch together before he went to work.

I was looking around for a while, trying to find a new place to try, and I came across Groupon (which I have bought from before), and there was a deal for a cute little French bistro in the city of San Diego, so after seeing that they have 4.5 stars on Yelp, I grabbed that deal quick! I was very excited, especially to tell DH that I finally found a place in San Diego that may just serve decent French food (we've had several bad experiences).

Well, I called this evening to make a reservation for tomorrow morning. I was excited, and asked for the reservation. I was then told that they were closed on Mondays, including Valentine's Day. This information was nowhere on the Groupon page.. and I imagine a LOT of people were thinking the same thing.. Valentine's brunch! The guy said that he had other phone calls about it when I apologized, so I shouldn't feel bad.

But still. Maybe I should've called ahead, but it never would've struck me that a restaurant in the downtown area of San Diego, CA would be closed on a Monday! I don't think I've ever been to a restaurant that was closed on Mondays before. I've heard of restaurants being closed on Sundays.. but Monday? I'm confused.

Ugh. Sorry for the vent. I'm just frustrated that I dropped $10 on a meal that won't be eaten.

*Edit* I will use the Groupon at another time.. but it's just still sad. I tried so hard to make it a perfect morning for DH before he had to work!

Why not just celebrate Tuesday or on the following weekend? I think anytime to enjoy the company of your signficant other is appropriate and doesn't need to be done on Valentines Day. Maybe make it a new tradition ?

Me and my fiance always celebrate on the 26th instead of the 14th we go out to a nice italian dinner . I don't why this started but it did lol.

I say use it a different day and enjoy!!!!! :)

Well now that you mention it, I'll say this at the risk of sounding like a complete spoiled brat: we're actually going up to Disneyland on Tuesday. But I know DH is disappointed that Valentine's Day falls on a Monday this year, since he works Monday evenings. I think that he's more disappointed because he thinks that I'm upset about it, but I'm okay.. but then again, I'm just more worried about him not having a good Valentine's Day.

I probably sound crazy! Somebody get me a doctor.. :lmao:

I wouldn't blame Groupon on this, they aren't responsible for stating the terms of using the Groupon, they just post the offer.

That is really dumb though that this place isn't open tomorrow.

Not that it helps your disappointment but....many, many French restaurants are dark on Mondays. It's traditional.

Monday is a pretty common day for restaurants to be closed. Closing on weekends doesn't make sense from a business point of view, so they use Monday to recover.

Having said that it surprises me that they don't make an exception for Valentine's Day, given that they would probably get a fair amount of business.

Not only French restaurants. Where I am, Asian restaurants are typically closed on Mondays as well.

If the deal is for today, you can still cancel the coupon. Go back to your account and click on Your Groupons. It should list a way to cancel, if the deal was made today.

Also, it is NOT Groupon's fault what day the restaurant is closed. they are not responsible for when EACH establishment they do deals for is open or closed.

Groupon actually lists a link to the business' website of every deal they do on the deal page. It is YOUR responsibility to check the website on your own to find out specific info about the business. You should have done that before you ordered the coupon.

Also, sometimes in the Groupon discussion for the deal (listed at the bottom,) people bring up the very questions, complaints or issues you mentioned.

As with anything you buy, it is Buyer Beware, and do your research carefully before buying a Groupon.

Having said all that, yeah, I'd be bummed, too, if I thought I found a great deal, paid for it, and it didn't work out. :(

Even if they were open tomorrow they could have been booked. When a holiday falls on a weekday we usually go out the weekend before or after so we can relax and enjoy ourselves. It's no fun to have to have to get up early for work in the morning.

Hopefully you'll find another way to celebrate tomorrow and can use the groupon certificate another day. :)

Sorry it didn't work out!

I also have often known of restaurants to be closed on Monday. I also have never heard of a brunch offered on a weekday...lunch of course, but brunch?

Anyway I hope you can find an alternative that works for you! :)

I bought a Groupon for laser hair removal. I have Lupus and lasers are sometimes a problem depending on the type. I had spoken with the owner and she said it shouldn't be a problem but check with dr. Since it was a weekend I purchased it so I wouldn't miss out. Once I was able to reach the dr they said it was ok but not recommended. I sent an email to Groupon acknowledging my fault but asked about cancelling. They said no problem even if my fault, and they refunded my money evrn knowing dr said ok but I decided against it. I didn't expect it at all as after all I did purchase it. They were nice and said no problem.

I suggest writing them and tell them nicely you planned to use it on Valentine's Day as there was nothing in the ad about no being able to. I've noticed most say can't be used on holidays if that is the policy. Likely they will give credit towards another Groupon. Great customer service I have found any time I had a question. I appreciated it and am a loyal customer now as I have confidence in them.

I don't think this is Groupon's fault - by offering the coupon they are not saying that the restaurant will operate different hours. There should have been a link to the restaurant's website so you could check things like hours of operation, exclusions, etc. Ironically, I saw one groupon type offer for a local restaurant that specifically said the offer was not available for St. Valentine's day.

I don't think it's strange that you couldn't brunch on a Monday as I consider that a Sunday/weekend thing. I think it's very unusual for a restaurant to be closed any day of the week but especially on St. Valentine's day.

Didn't know that- thank you! I feel better now that I know that it's a French restaurant thing. I've never had the occasion to go to a French place on a Monday, come to think of it.

And for those who took it the wrong way, I'm not really blaming Groupon. I was just venting about my frustrations! And I did state that it was my fault that I didn't do enough research prior to purchasing it.

I will look into cancelling it, though.. we don't go out for breakfast a lot (mainly since I cook a better breakfast than we can get out), but since DH works on V-Day, it's the only meal we could eat out together.

Sorry that didn't work out for you. My husband works a 24 hour shift tomorrow so we had a special dinner tonight!

This isn't a french restaurant, but I highly recommend it! My daughter, niece and I had late breakfast/ early lunch friday (here in San Diego) at Cafe On Park.

Everything was delicious and I thought it was very reasonable. It's on Park and University. I can't wait to go back again.

Personally I would have been surprised to get a reservation this close to Valentines day even if the restaurant had been open. Around here places are booked all day on Valentines weeks in advance.

Wow! Just checked out the website.. thank you so much! I think that may be our Valentine's breakfast tomorrow!!!!

.

Its really not a french restaurant thing- if restaurants close at all aroudn here its on a Monday-thats the normal day for Restaurants and hair cutters to be closed.

Lots of restaurants here, and many are closed on Mondays. Brunch is only served on weekends (and usually Sundays). DH and I went out for dinner once on Valentines day 16 years ago, and vowed NEVER AGAIN! Too crowded, and limited menus.

lots of restaurants are closed on Mondays. It is pretty standard. I don't think that this is groupon's fault.
