Vegetarians?

Aw thanks Emily (I'm Tracy by the way!)
I would have 'liked' your post too.
We think alike, and I love that song!

Hi Tracy (:

The only time I push my beliefs on someone is when they start bashing my way of life, or making fun of me. That's only been like twice. I do like how a few of my friends have become vegetarians, just because they were curious so I explained to them, and they liked the thinking. I'm not a vegan, but I very rarely eat eggs. My thought is that because they're not fertilized, they're not exactly life, yet. But what tends to stop me, is that eating chicken eggs is similar to just eating an egg you could find in one of my ovaries. Similar. Not quite... haha. It just kind of disgusts me. I rarely drink milk, the taste doesn't appeal to me. I'm addicted to soy milk. I go through one of those Silk half gallons every other day, at least. Mmm delicious.

I have never been a big milk person other then chocolate milk. But then I discovered Silk Chocolate and I'm hooked! I make Silk 'milkshakes' which are yummy! I do eat eggs. And at some point I'd love to take a 'vegan for 30 days challenge' but up at school it's difficult for me. But one day perhaps.
I come from a big meat eating extended family...and no one really understands my choices. I try really hard not to mention it, or make a big deal out of it. But someone always brings it up at family dinners (my immediate family is chill with it) but my grandparents do not understand. I do have some vegetarians in the family but no one I'm close to. I do have a very close veg friend so that's helpful :)
But I don't bring up my beliefs unless I'm directly asked, I don't like to stir up controversy at the thanksgiving table you know?

Honestly, I haven't researched farther than some magazine that PETA sent me a while ago... but PETA is annoyingly obnoxious and I don't really support PETA. I don't feel the need to research. As long as I don't go forcing everyone to be vegetarians, I don't feel like I have to have a reason.

My opinion: eating the insides of animals is gross. raising animals just to eat is cruel. i know that i would not like to be raised just so someone can eat me. i know i take the 'golden rule' very far, but it's just how i feel. my being a vegetarian is based on my beliefs and my morals. i couldn't ruin the life of an animal just because i felt like i needed to eat it. not when there are other options for me. i believe all life is sacred and i take it to that farthest extent.

lol PETA's so biased. They were outside a store in Chicago one time and it killed me not to yell "Free Mike Vick!"

But I respect that. The thing I found odd about your comment is that animals weren't hear to be eaten, because I think they obviously do have a place in our diet, if you so choose.

I like all of Tracy and Emily's posts. :) Emily, you explained it very well for me. It's just a...belief thing, ya know? I'm not trying to quote any facts or data or whatever, just explain why I want to do it.

I don't really believe animals were put here for the sole purpose of us eating them. Personally, I think it's kind of selfish to think that way. Animals have families and lives and feelings, and it shouldn't be our right to take that away from them.

It's like, could you imagine eating your dog? No, because it gets happy when you come home, and cuddles with you, and wags it's tail when you play with it. It has feelings and people who love it. And so does every other animal. JMHO.

That's not a very fair comparison, IMO. Dogs are domesticated and are bred to be pets. Over time, they haven't been bred as a food source because they do more for us than being a food source would; they protect, they herd, they befriend, etc. Cows on the other hand, while they have feelings, are not going to cuddle with you, protect you, entertain you, etc.

I think it's fair. They're all animals.

Cows can entertain, btw. They can be very loving creatures.

Um, ok. I have nothing to say about the last comment, it's your opinion and you're entitled to it. All I'm saying; some people think pythons are very loving creatures too. They're notorious for strangling - as one did to a 2 year old in Florida last week and killed the toddler.

How are cows and pythons comparable?

Are they not both animals?

I'm just saying; something you see as lovable and entertaining can turn on you so fast.
So can pitbulls, yet many people have those as pets. I have a chowchow, and they're known for being very mean, yet mine is very timid and cuddly. All animals can be mean and/or lovable.

I've never really heard of a cow turning on someone, but hey, I'm sure it's happened. I'm not really sure why my quote about them being lovable made you speechless?

Actually, last I heard, pitbulls were starting to be banned in some areas.

No, it was the entertaining cow comment that made me speechless. I don't see how cows are entertaining, unless you tip them?

Lol, they are. My mom had a cow farm thing near her house growing up, and she says that she'd a lot of time with them.
Some people don't find cats entertaining, or birds, or any animal.

I really like what you said here, about your pets. Because people could easily have a sheep or a pig as a pet. When they're not kept in a factory farm, they are very clean and loveable...much like a dog or cat to some people. So there is a comparison to be made there. You can't imagine killing your little puppy...why is it ok to kill a cow, a pig or a chicken? Because they've been domesticated to be eaten? Yeah domestication means dirty cages, hormones, chemicals and overall 'dirty' meat. Just because something can be done doesn't mean that we should do it.

I know, and I think it's sad that it's become such an impersonal thing. I don't think many people could live with it, if they actually knew what was going on at those factory farms. But alas, ignorance is bliss, I guess.

My thanksgiving table is not a very happy place when my uncle starts telling me how "incredibly unhealthy I am..." and all these things that he obviously doesn't know. My grandparents just try to tell me that i'm "a growing girl" and i have to explain that I know that i'm a growing girl that's why i get my protein from other things.

Thanks, Jenny. Glad I could, kind of sort of, help you there. (: I really like your post.

Dogs are domesticated, but in thought, cows are domesticated, too. Cows aren't REALLY supposed to be kept in pens all day so they can't move so their meat is... fresh, and not 'tough'. The meat industry keeps most of their animals in inhumane conditions. Every animal you've eaten is "domesticated" in some sort of way.

I think it's fair. They're all animals.

I love cows. How can someone not love those big dumb things? Like seriously. They're just so lovable.

If they're not here to be eaten, they can be here for quite a few other things. One, perhaps, is to live their own life and not be tortured and harmed by humans. Another, is to benefit the life of another carnivore (which have the teeth and the digestive system TO specifically eat meat and only meat). Or to just keep the grass population from overtaking the world. ;)

You're 100% right. It's very sad that people see another animal's flesh as just 'meat'
In it's perfect little containers you don't even think twice about how the chicken was treated before it became that skinless boneless chicken cutlet, or how the cow was tortured and separated from it's mother to become that hamburger.
It's disgusting that there is such a disconnect between the cute furry animal, and what you see when you eat meat. People have become so distant from the fact of the suffering that is unnecessary. It just amazes me.

It always makes me sad. I wonder how people don't know. Maybe they're uneducated? A select few are probably ignorant. I think that if people knew what happens to the animals, then I'd bet the majority of them would become vegetarians. You don't have to love animals to still feel horrible when you're informed on how the animal is treated. Does that make sense?

I completely agree (again, lol) with Tracy and Emily.

:)

I don't know. I tried to explain to my friend why I was going vegetarian, and she completely tuned me out and said she didn't want to know anymore after I started describing the factory farms. Unfortunately, I think a lot of people like to live in their ignorant little world. :guilty:

That's sad. It's like my parents, I'll see that they're going to eat veal for dinner and I begin telling them how the baby cow probably only saw its mother for a few seconds before it was shoved into a pen where it was immobile, then given food covered in poop. All so the meat wouldn't be too tough. My parents just tell me that they don't want to think about it.
I don't know how you don't think about it, though!
