Have any of you asked for a special meal at a table service restaurant? I've heard that the chef will sometimes make an entree for you if you don't see something on the menu.

Thanks!

I have, but I also called 72 hours prior to my dinner. You speak with a chef on the phone about what it is you are able to eat and if you have any allergies. I wouldn't expect much if you didn't call ahead, if they have the extra time to prepare it is much easier to meet your needs.

Hi. My sister is a vegan and calls a week ahead and speaks with a chef. They are able to order ingredients that are not normally on the menu, like tofu, for the day of your ADR and will make a special entree. She even does that at buffet places, obviously they don't make multiple things but they will make one entree for her. The only restaurant that refused was Liberty Tree Tavern they said she could eat the veggie side dish.

Yes, but some times you are just stuck with a salad. I have a mushroom allergy, many of Disneys vegetarian entrees are mushroom items. I have had a couple of outstanding not on the menu meals when I had it noted on my ADR. And a couple of places it was a salad and that was it. Kinda hit or miss.

Not sure about specially requesting an entree, but many restaurants have a separate vegetarian menu that they only provide upon request, so be sure to ask your server or hostess for it when you are seated! And they are very good about modifying entrees to serve them without the meat. When I asked to do such a thing, that is usually when they offered the special menu, but often I just preferred to order pasta without the chicken, or something like that. They were always very accommodating.

From everything I've read around here you're best off letting them know when you make ADR's and checking back in with the restaurant itself before heading down. I don't remember which thread I read it on, it could have even been another site's boards, but the post was essentially a rant where the poster went Christmas week and was furious that she was told at a few different restaurants that they would do what they could but more often than not she was offered salads and larger portions of veggie side dishes. Several people asked if she'd contacted said restaurants about her vegetarianism and special accomedations, especially because it was a busy time of year, and her answer was no.

Yes, do note on your ADR's that you are a vegetarian and if you have any sort of allergies. But if you really want to try a restaurant but do not care for an item, try calling the restaurants directly and ask to speak to a chef. Just make sure you give them proper time (I was told 72 hours) to prepare your meal. I also mention to my server that I am a vegetarian when they first come to the table. Some are very knowledgeable, some will offer to have a chef come to our table to speak with me..

Enjoy your trip. :goodvibes

I have read before that if you ask, the person taking your dining reservations will put "Vegetarian" or "Vegan" in the notes section of your receipt that gets printed and put on your table to give your server a heads up.

When I tried to get them to do this, they repeatedly claimed they could not, despite the fact that I had seen pictures of recepits saying "vegan/vegetarian". Finally, after concocting an elaborate story about how my boyfriend was very sensitive about cruelty to animals and would most certainly burst into tears if meat was mentioned in front of him, she agreed to put "Very sensitive vegetarian. Do not mention meat items."

I nearly died when she read it back to me. But hey, at least they'll know now!!

Every menu has at least one vegetarian option. Check out the menus on Allears and if the only veggie option doesn't sound good to you, call the resturant ahead of time and see what they can do.

I noticed that this year instead of being marked "Vegetarian/Vegan" for me it was marked down as an allergy. I have no idea why this was - neither were the servers. Everything worked out just fine, it was just odd.
