So, after joining disboards, I decided I should share the reviews I wrote in December of 2011 for the various places my partner and I ate. We were there for 7 days / 6 nights. Enjoy!

[DISCLAIMER: I should start out by saying that, while I am vegan, I am not striving to “do” veganism perfectly. I don’t ask what is in bread (I only avoid breads that obviously have cheese or butter on/in them.), I love to eat honey, I wear some leather, I eat white sugar and drink alcoholic beverages without finding out how they are processed, etc. I also do not care what other people eat and don’t particularly like talking about my dietary habits with, well, anyone. I say all of this up front because I don’t want anyone reading this and thinking that I knew what was in the hamburger bun I ate at the Sci-Fi Drive-In Theater or the spread on the Vegetable Sandwich I had at Backlot Express.]

This was one of the two table-service places I chose. I made a reservation here because I heard that Chef TJ (Google “Disney World” and “Chef TJ” and “vegan” if you’re curious.) was working there and is supposed to be amazing when it comes to dealing with folks with dietary restrictions. I knew the chance of him actually being there when we were there was slim, but I figured it was worth the gamble.

Since this is a buffet, I made sure to call ahead to talk to the chef. However, the person I talked to at the Disney phone number basically told me that they don’t really talk to folks beforehand because it is a buffet. What?

Anyway, when we got there, the chef came to our table and then said he’d show me what at the buffet was vegan. Sounds good, right? Well, after looking at about ¼ of the buffet and declaring that nothing so far was vegan, he seemed kind of overwhelmed, so he took me aside and started asking me what sort of things I did/didn’t like and said he’d make something for me. Once again, this sounded great.

I told him that I was pretty flexible (I like trying new things and being surprised.), but hated onions (I don’t like the taste, usually, and they often upset my stomach.) and didn’t want anything with too much garlic. The chef still seemed kind of confused and asked if a stir fry would be OK.

(I’m sorry, but I have to complain for a second. It is completely impossible that I was the only vegan at that restaurant that week that this chef had to deal with. Shouldn’t there be a go-to suggestion outside of the damned stir fry option? It’s basically like asking me if I would just want a salad, except the salad is cooked and served on rice.)

Since he seemed overwhelmed and I was kind of out of it from traveling, I said that would be fine. He asked about veggies and, once again, I told him no onions.

He showed up a little while later with a stir fry. With onions. He even said, “Here is your stir fry. It has onions. I hope that’s OK.”

First thing: No, it’s actually kind of not OK. Secondly: It didn’t just have some onions; it had a TON of onions. I think that about ⅓ of the vegetables in it were onions.*

Gross.

(Another aside: This place was NOT cheap. It was about $40/each for dinner. Now, it is a “character meal”, so there were folks - Cinderella, Prince Charming, the evil stepmother, and the two stepsisters** - roaming around, so I understand why it is more than a regular sit-down place. My partner and I didn’t really “pay” this price, since we’d only paid a fraction of what the dining plan usually costs. However, if I’d paid for the entire dining plan or the entire cost of this meal, I would have been incredibly disappointed.)

I didn’t eat much of the stir fry, since it mostly tasted of onions. After a little while, the chef came back with a HUGE platter that had tabbouleh, diced tomatoes, and diced avocado. Seriously, this was HUGE. I bet there were almost two cups of tabbouleh on that plate. I didn’t eat a ton of it (I like tabbouleh, but don’t love it.), but I appreciated having another option, especially one with avocado. Avocado all the time.

By far, the best thing about this meal was the dessert. I know it might seem silly, but I loved that they made me a dessert tower. It was tofutti ice cream (which I’ve only ever had in ice cream sandwiches and such) alternating with chunks of banana on a skewer, with a huge chunk of pineapple as the base and chocolate syrup drizzled over it. They even made one for my partner, even though she isn’t vegan. It was wonderful and it is entirely possible that I ate all/most of it, but I could be remembering that wrong.

Overall, I wouldn’t recommend 1900 Park Fare to folks who are vegan or have other food issues that make dining at the buffet complicated/difficult. My only caveat would be if you are more clever than I was and manage to talk to a chef beforehand and confirm a menu for yourself. I definitely won’t be stopping by on my next trip to WDW.

*This vegetable-mix-with-onions thing will come back later.
**The person playing Anastasia (one of Cinderella’s stepsisters) was really great. I also felt like the cast members at the character meals who were in costume were really good at asking us if we wanted to interact with them and, when we said we didn’t, they’d go on their way. As someone who even as a child was uncomfortable in those sorts of situations, it was really nice how smoothly that part of our visit went.

Pizza Planet
Disney’s Hollywood Studios
Lunch on Sunday

My partner is a huge Toy Story fan, so Pizza Planet was a must-visit. I wasn’t really hungry, so she got a pizza that came with a decent-sized salad and ordered a cookie for dessert. I tried to avoid the cheese as I picked at her salad a bit (since fresh veggies are always good), stole a few pizza crusts, and ate a bit of the cookie, which I’m sure was not vegan.

The theming was cute and whatnot, but there honestly wasn’t anything that I could eat there. I guess I could ask for a cheeseless pizza if it wasn’t a busy time of day, but I’m from Chicago, so I don’t tend to want to eat pizza when I’m on vacation, since I can get it cheaper and better here. I wouldn’t mind hanging out and stealing pieces of lettuce and pizza crust while someone else ate here again, though.

Sci-Fi Drive-In Theater
Disney’s Hollywood Studios
Sunday at 2:00 PM

This was one of my partner’s choices and pretty much set the theme for her picking amazing places while I failed miserably.

The first thing that I’ll say about this place is that the theming is adorable. I love a fake sky indoors (I’m weird like that.) and this has that, plus goofy/weird things playing on the movie screen. We were seated in a car next to each other and I really liked how dimly lit it was. I don’t know…I just liked it, OK?

tumblr_lw240l19aU1r50p4mo1_500.png

When our waitress came over, I asked if I could have a root beer float with vegan ice cream as my dessert, since I wasn’t planning on getting an actual dessert. She said she needed to make sure they had the ice cream, but came back right away with a nice, big root beer float, including some extra on the side.

The chef came out and was incredibly nice. He asked if I’d had a chance to look at the menu and if anything looked good because he could try to veganize (my word, not his) something from the menu if I wanted. The vegetable burger sounded good, so I told him I wanted that (hold the balsamic glaze and onions, please) with sweet potato fries. Since it was already vegan, he was like, “Let’s do it!”.

(Just a quick note to mention that my wonderful partner ordered the rib-eye steak. We are a wonderful pair.)

While we waited for our food, I enjoyed my root beer float, but I ran out of root beer pretty quickly, since there were three scoops of ice cream in my glass. I asked our waitress for more root beer and she brought some over, and later on even brought me a bit more with ice cream. I ended up taking what was left to go because us vegans can’t just be throwing out things like vegan root beer floats.

Anyway, my burger came and it was really, really good. The surprise, however, was the sweet potato fries. I usually like sweet potato fries well enough, but these had the lightest dusting of cinnamon sugar on top and…yeah. They were amazing.

Not surprisingly, I would recommend Sci-Fi Drive-In Theater in a heartbeat. I felt that both the waitress and the chef who were there when we had a our reservation were great, and they seemed eager to make the menu work for me, even if they needed to alter a dish to make it vegan. I’m not sure what else on the menu is vegan (or could be made to be), but if you’re looking for a veggie burger that isn’t some pre-packaged, frozen deal, this definitely works. Plus, those fries were wonderful and I got a root beer float (and could have gotten a shake if I’d wanted).

I would definitely go back here again, especially since none of the other table-service restaurants at Hollywood Studios are that intriguing to me. Part of me wonders what the chef there could have come up with for me that wasn’t on the menu or wasn’t exactly on the menu, but the burger was so good that I know I’ll just get that again.

'Ohana
Disney’s Polynesian Resort
Monday at 10:30 AM

This was another one of my partner’s choices and it was AMAZING.

This place does family-style dining, so they showed up at our table with a basket of buns/muffins and stuff. I knew I couldn’t eat all/most of these, so I just chilled out while my partner ate. However, pretty soon after that, the person who dropped them off came over a bit panicked and asked if someone had a food allergy. After I told him I was vegan, he whisked the basket away while saying he was sorry for the error.

I don’t think my partner was thrilled about that, but sometimes you have to suffer when you’re with someone who doesn’t eat like most folks. Ha.

tumblr_lw3onyEzlq1r50p4mo1_500.png

Soon, the chef (who was also really, really nice) came over and explained what he could bring out to me. He asked me if there was anything he should know about my dislikes or other issues, and I told him about my dislike of onions. We also explained that my partner eats ALL THE THINGS, and so he said they would have a little platter for me and one for her. Perfect.

In a little while, we both had food, and my partner had a bun and a muffin on her platter to replace the initial basket. My platter was consisted of a skillet with tofu, veggies, and potatoes, plus some Mickey Mouse head-shaped waffles. Cute! When the chef dropped the plates off, he told me that, since I didn’t like onions, he’d picked them out as well as he could from the veggie mix they use. How awesome is that?! There were a few in there, of course, but they were easy to eat around and didn’t make everything TASTE LIKE ONIONS. Everything was delicious, including the vegan version of the Mickey Mouse waffles. I can’t even remember the last time I had waffles, so it was a treat for me.

Oh, I should also mention the juice they had, since I still obsess over it a bit. It was an orange / guava / passion fruit blend and…yeah. Delicious.

This was another character meal and it featured Lilo and Stitch, with Mickey and Pluto, too. Once again, it was cute, but this was even better than the one at 1900 Park Fare because they did this goofy little parade through the restaurant with all of the kids and characters banging on instruments of some sort. It was really adorable, and probably was so nice because this was an early meal, so neither the parents nor the kids wants to die / kill anyone yet, since it was likely their first stop of the day.

Also, the table next to us was a group of four folks, probably in their 40s (but I’m awful at guessing ages), who looked like capital-L Lesbians. They were pretty amusing and were having a good time and it was nice to see some level of queerness in WDW that wasn’t coming from us.

Not surprisingly, I highly recommend this place for breakfast for vegans. Every cast member we interacted with seemed hyper-aware of me having an allergy listed on my reservation and they were incredibly conscientious about it. They also seem to have their plan for “what to do if a guess doesn’t eat X”, which made it a lot easier for me to relax. It helped that everything I had was really good, of course.

This is another one that we will definitely be going to on our next trip, since it was such an easy (and delicious) meal for me and my partner loved her food, too. Plus, I want to watch happy kids run around all goofily while I drink delicious juice.

Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe
Magic Kingdom
Monday for late lunch/early dinner

This was one of my partner’s choices, but I remember coming here the first time I went to WDW with my family years and years ago. It’s such an oddly goofy place, but I like it. It was a bit loud and hectic, but I think all of the larger quick-service restaurants are that way.

I got the Vegetable Burger with fries for my meal and one of the kids’ packages of grapes for dessert. The burger was fine, but the best part was that they have a condiment bar, so I was able to put shredded lettuce, a bit of ketchup, and a bunch of pickles on it myself. I’m picky about the “extras” that go on my food, so this sort of thing is heaven for me.

I’d eat here again, since I like the kitschy weirdness of it. Plus, the burger was fine and filling and I loved the condiment bar. Pickles for everybody!

Sunshine Seasons
Epcot
Tuesday for late breakfast

I picked this place for a late breakfast because I’d read that they had a few different options for vegans. The main problem we ran into was having to wait for them to open and then, once they did, they didn’t have all of the items listed because it was early. Another issue is that it’s set up with a bunch of different counters that serve different things, which I always find overwhelming.

I ended up settling for something prepackaged, maybe some sort of hummus sampler or something? I don’t remember, honestly. I also grabbed a clearly-not-vegan brownie or cupcake. It was pretty good, but all I remember was that it had chocolate in it.

I definitely wouldn’t go here to get food again. I think it might be better for folks who want to eat something healthy at WDW, but will eat dairy and/or meat, since it definitely had some nice options as far as that goes. It might also be better overall later in the day than when it first opens.

Rose & Crown Pub & Dining Room
Epcot
Tuesday at 1:00 PM

This was my partner’s third and final table-service choice. It’s in the World Showcase section of Epcot in the Great Britain Pavilion.

I don’t have much to say about this one. The waitress was nice and the chef checked in with me, but I opted for the Seasonal Vegetable Curry, which was already vegan. It was just OK: not bad by a long shot, but I definitely wouldn’t order it again. The best thing I can say about the meal is that the lentil bread was delicious. I could’ve eaten a whole basket of it.

Since none of their offerings were vegan, I asked for fresh fruit for dessert. The waitress said all they had was the children’s meal portion, which was grapes, cantaloupe, and honeydew, which sounded good to me, since I wanted something light and sweet. She was pretty apologetic about it not being a full-size dessert, which makes me assume that a lot of folks are kind of mean about that sort of thing. I made sure she knew that I was totally happy with what she brought out, and she seemed a bit less nervous.

So, I’m sure you can tell from my review that I probably wouldn’t recommend this place. It might be better if you called ahead and talked to the chef, but I’d avoid the curry because it was just meh and there are so many delicious things to eat at WDW.

We definitely won’t be dining here again when we go back. I’d like try a different place in World Showcase, maybe Morocco. I do kinda wish we would’ve shared a scotch flight or that I would’ve gotten a Cider & Black (cider with a shot of blackcurrant juice), but we can always stop by the pub part for a drink or a flight instead of dining there.

Electric Umbrella Restaurant
Epcot
Tuesday for dinner

This reminded me of Cosmic Ray’s, as far as the menu goes, as well as being a larger quick-service restaurant. This was one of the places that I chose and (Surprise!!!) I liked what I got.

I’d read online that folks liked the Southwest Black Bean Flatbread, so I got that with just lettuce and tomato (since there are things that aren’t vegan or I thought I might not like on it) and fries. I can’t remember if I got an actual dessert, but if I did, it wasn’t vegan. My partner wasn’t hungry, so I ate alone on the patio while she checked out a store and had a cigarette. It was later in the day (after dinnertime), so it was pretty quiet while I hung out outside.

I would definitely go back here for that black bean flatbread again. I love black bean patties when they’re seasoned well, and this one was really good. Yay!

Restaurantosaurus
Disney’s Animal Kingdom
Wednesday for lunch

There wasn’t a single quick-service restaurant other than Restaurantosaurus that had something vegan (or easily veganizable) at Animal Kingdom, so we headed over there for lunch. (Full disclosure: We also stopped here because my partner really likes dinosaurs.) I got the Vegetable Sub with sweet potato fries. They made me a fresh one without cheese, onions, or mushrooms (I sound so picky!), and it ended up taking a surprisingly long time.

It was good enough. I don’t really remember much about it except that the bread was pretty good. I think I may have gotten a piece of cheesecake (not vegan!) and had a bit of that, too.

The next time we go to Animal Kingdom, I’d probably try to make sure we have a large breakfast and maybe grab a snack while we’re at the park instead of eating at Restaurantosaurus again. Animal Kingdom isn’t a full-day park for us anyway, so that would be doable.

Jiko - The Cooking Place
Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge
Wednesday at 6:00 PM

This was my other choice for a table-service restaurant. I’d seen a lot of positive reviews of the food from vegan folks online. They have a separate vegan menu (in addition to vegetarian, gluten-free, lactose intolerant, and PKU menus), so it seemed like a good idea. Since we had 6 table-service meal credits apiece, we each had 3 credits to play with when choosing table-service restaurants. I used my first on 1900 Park Fare and my last two on Jiko, since it “cost’ two credits.

We had a bit of time to waste before our reservations, so we wandered around Animal Kingdom Lodge for a bit, spending some time in the gorgeous lobby and then some more time roaming around to find the zebras for my partner (which we did). For a large, relatively busy space, the lobby was very nice to just hang out in and wind down a bit. We also hung out in the bar area of Jiko for a little while before we were called for our reservation, but there’s not really much to report about that other than the area is pretty small and it took a while for us to get a seat from someone who was leaving.

The first thing I’ll say about Jiko is that, while it is really pretty, it’s a bit too fancypants for me. It wasn’t overly stuffy, but there were definitely a lot of businessmen-types and rather well-dressed folks, which isn’t my crowd.

I requested the vegan menu once we were seated, since we were both initially given the regular menu. The waiter was nice about asking if we had any questions, so I asked him whether he would recommend the Curry-roasted Vegetables or the Egyptian Kushari (lentils, couscous, and fresh chickpeas with tomato sauce, almonds, and harissa vinaigrette).

Two things about that:
1 - Reading the descriptions now, I can’t believe I was having a difficult time choosing one of these dishes because the kushari sounds awesome.
2 - NEVER ask someone who isn’t vegan and doesn’t seem to have a familiarity with it (e.g., our waiter) what vegan dish they’d recommend because they probably don’t eat dishes without animal products very often.

The waiter recommended the Curry-roasted Vegetables, so I went with that. We also got the Taste of Africa, which was “African-inspired Dips with Lentil Pappadam and Whole-Wheat Lavosh”. (We had to pay extra for this because our dining plan only covered an entrée, a dessert, and a drink.) Only the pappadum was vegan, but that was fine with me because it was really good. I don’t remember what the dips were, but I do remember that there were four and my partner liked the two that I didn’t like so much, so that worked out well.

Our food came and…meh. I don’t know if I was hoping to give WDW a chance to redeem themselves for the meh curry at Rose & Crown, but it was utterly forgettable. All I remember thinking at the time was that it was NOT worth two table-service credits and that I was really disappointed.

Well, that and that I should not be allowed to choose table-service restaurants.

Dessert was definitely the high point of the meal for me. I ordered the sorbet with fresh fruit, choosing the coconut sorbet. (There may have been other flavor options, but I can’t remember what they were.) My partner ended up getting the other vegan dessert option which was Rice Dream ice cream with mixed berries. She said it was just OK, but holy crap my sorbet was amazing. By far the best dessert of the trip. Sometimes, the simplest foods are the most delicious.

This was another bad choice by me. I wouldn’t have minded “spending” two credits on a meal if it was really good, but an interesting appetizer (which wasn’t paid for by our credits anyway) and a lovely, simple dessert do not qualify for that.

This is clearly not a restaurant I would ever visit again. It was so underwhelming that I don’t have anything more to say about it.

Tortuga Tavern
Magic Kingdom
Thursday for lunch

This was one of the places on my list because I knew they had a decent toppings bar and I really like Mexican (and Americanized Mexican) food. I got the Vegetarian Burrito and tossed a bunch of lettuce and other stuff on it from the toppings bar. It was surprisingly good for being a burrito from a theme park.

Since this was one of the cheaper quick-service places and we didn’t want full meals, we paid for our food here instead of using our credits. I really liked what I got, so I’d definitely stop here again if we wanted something that wasn’t heavy.

Tangierine Cafe
Epcot
Thursday for dinner

This was another stop in the World Showcase part of Epcot. It was late in the day and I was hungry while my partner wasn’t, so I got a meal here for myself. I grabbed the Vegetable Platter (falafel, tangierine couscous salad, hummus, tabouleh, lentil salad, and marinated olives), along with some baklava for dessert. The food was pretty meh. I liked the couscous salad, from what I remember, but not much else. The baklava was yummy.

This is another place I wouldn’t visit again, unless I wanted a piece of baklava for a snack. It’s not too big of a deal, though, since there are a lot of options in World Showcase.

Backlot Express
Disney’s Hollywood Studios
Friday for lunch

And then, suddenly, it was our last day and we had one quick-service credit left, so we had lunch at Hollywood Studios. We used it on the Vegetable Sandwich (minus the cheese and mushrooms) with French fries for me, and grabbed a chocolate cupcake with some sort of Xmassy decorations on it (definitely not vegan) to share. The cupcake was yummy and I remember thinking the sandwich was good, but that’s about all. I mean, it’s pretty hard for a vegetable sandwich to stand out.

While the meal here wasn’t particularly memorable, I wouldn’t mind going back here again if we needed a quick-service meal, but it wouldn’t be a must-visit for me.

Snacks

I didn’t take particularly careful note of the snacks we had on our trip, but here are a few notes.

Generally, the popcorn in Walt Disney World is vegan because the butter flavoring they use doesn’t contain any animal products. The soft pretzels were also usually vegan, except for when they were filled with cream cheese or some other sort of cheese.

We shared a churro at the Mexico Pavilion at Epcot, but I’d bet my life that it wasn’t vegan.

Ice cream from the Plaza Ice Cream Parlour on Main Street at Magic Kingdom. They have both Tofutti and Rice Dream, so I got something here. I’m not sure if I just grabbed a scoop or got something else, but I know it was yummy.

Some GIANT pink strawberry muffin from The Writer’s Shop at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. We actually bought this before we headed back to our hotel and shared it for a light breakfast the next morning.

Lessons learned

Skip the 2-credit table-service places unless you have a specific reason for needing/wanting to go to them. They aren’t worth it.

Listen to my partner. She has an uncanny knack for picking awesome table-service restaurants.

Try to use snack credits on stuff at is over $3.50. Keep in mind that there are a lot of “souvenir snacks” that you can use your credits on, so just keep an eye out for those if you’re the sort of person who likes to take edible souvenirs home with you.

Being vegan in Walt Disney World is doable, but you might need to be a bit flexible for it to all work out.

Do research. Checking out menus for quick-service restaurants beforehand is an absolute must. Do not underestimate how handy it is to know where you can eat before you get to each of the parks. We actually marked off the quick-service places when we grabbed a map when we got to each park. This might seem anal-retentive, but you’ll appreciate it when you don’t have to wander around to three different restaurants to find something you can eat when you’ve been walking for ten hours a day.

Thanks for this report! My husband is a 25 year vegan, and I am not. I don't eat meat very often, but it's the dairy products that I can't seem to give up. My husband does pay close attention to what he eats, and if there is a chance that there is an animal product ingredient he skips it. We ate at Le Cellier on our honeymoon and I was worried that there wouldn't be anything for him, but when we left he said "I think that was the best meal I've ever eaten in my life!!". They made him a stack of portobella mushrooms with some kind of red wine and balsamic reduction, and cooked him some asparagus that was seasoned perfectly. I don't like asparagus and I would have eaten a plateful of what they made. They also gave him vegan bread, non-dairy spread, and something for dessert that I can't remember at the moment.

Primetime 50's Cafe made him a root beer float with Tofutti as a surprise. He had mentioned to the waitress ("cousin") that he was vegan, and when he got up to use the restroom she came over to me and whispered, "Do you think he'd want a root beer float? I think I've got some vegan ice cream in the back of the freezer"--keeping in character with the theme of being at your relatives' house for dinner. My husband needed to pick his jaw up off the ground when he sat down to that! This was about 6 years ago, and if anyone in the park stocked Tofutti they were keeping it a secret. Now I'm finding a lot of restaurants have it, as well as the ice cream shop in MK.

Everywhere we went the chefs and waitstaff bent over backwards to make sure he was totally happy with what he got. You wouldn't think that an "amusement park" would be so accommodating, but we haven't found a non-vegan restaurant anywhere else that was so willing to work with him.

I'm always looking for more suggestions though, so I'll save your trip report!

One suggestion, too....if you go back to AKL, next time go to Boma instead of Jiko. They have a GIANT buffet with so many things to choose from that it's a great place for parties consisting of vegans and omnivores.

That's what I've heard. We won't be able to fit it in to our next trip, but I think we'll check it out during a future trip.

Thanks for your report! My mom is vegan in the sense that she'll still eat honey and wear leather but just wants to eat in a way that's more healthy for her. It was good to hear your perspective on the vegan options at Disney World. From what my mom has experienced some restaurants in Disney World are more accommodating than others and you never really know what you're going to get.
