Vegan Meals?

I have read Deb's site listings for vegan items but I think they're all still in the process of being updated, and it's gotta be tough since Disney is coming out with new choices all the time! Any fellow vegans been to The World recently and had some delicious meals they would like to recommend? :wave2:

I myself am not a vegan but my sister is. We were planning a trip together about a year and 1/2 ago, unfortunately it didn't happen, but the first thing she went out and bought was a guide book called

"Vegetarian Walt Disney World and Greater Orlando"

which has vegan stuff in there too. She found it very beneficial and we had breakfast lunch and dinner planned every day b/c of this book.

You can get it on amazon...

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...103-9029353-3531831?v=glance&s=books&n=507846

and I believe they update it often. Good LUCK!

We were at WDW during this past Christmas with my daughter and son-in-law. She's vegetarian and he is strictly vegan. Almost all the WDW restaurants can be veg/vegan friendly. Some of the restaurants are outstanding both for what they offer and for excellent guest service.
Among their favorites were ~~

Rose & Crown in England ~~ Had PS for dinner (7:30-got an outside table with a spectacular view of Illuminations). We stopped by the restaurant at noon to make sure they had 'vegan' noted on the PS. The day chef came out and asked my SIL to return later that day to speak with the evening chef. When we returned, the chef came out and spent at least 15 minutes with my SIL talking with him about what he could do for his meal. His meal that evening was perfect.

Boma at the AKL ~~ Excellent choices here. One of the chefs walked my DD & SIL through all the food pods to point out everything they could eat. This restaurant continues to be one of our favorites.

Spoodles at the BW ~~ Here the server was very knowledgeable about veg/vegan choices, but he also had the chef come to the table to make sure everything would be just what they wanted. Good choices here.

Jiko at AKL ~~ Very good veg/vegan items, but our dinner here was marred by a very unpleasant server. Would return here for the food, but would definitely not sit in this server's area again.

Mama Melrose at MGM ~~ Best choices for vegans at MGM.

Beaches and Cream at BC ~~ This was one of the favorites :) I think they ate there at least 3 times over the course of the week.

Columbia Harbor House at MK ~~ Good vegan chili here.

I would agree with the other poster about getting the book mentioned. It has very helpful info and lists many more restaurants, both fast food and "nice" restaurants. There are other places we had wanted to try, but they'll have to wait until next trip. One other note ~ do make PS's and have them note "vegan" on the PS; call the restaurant the previous day or early the day of to make sure that's on there. ::MickeyMo

Just a warning on the book - I haven't look at it lately, but it was out of date on a few items last year as menus change quickly.

However, my favourite places due to selection and willingness of staff are:

Spoodles (the dip appetizer is $7, and too much for an entree for one person!)

Yacht Club Galley - very willing to do anything

Brown Derby - usually extremely willing to be totally creative

Le Cellier

Concourse Steakhouse - they will do anything it seems, and cheerfully and well (the veggie sides can be combined to create a huge dinner for under $10)

California Grill

Chefs de France (ask for the manager as there are sometimes language barriers)

Bistro de Paris (best WDW meal ever!!!!)

Boma (varies due to buffet changes every few days)

Jiko - lots of choices, very creative chef

I am not vegan but veggie, but often thought 'pity the poor vegans' at WDW. Having said that, things are getting better.

As you can see, most of my fav's are full service places. The counter service is a little tougher, and I usually don't even check it out anymore.

I've posted lots on veggie meals, will see if I can find a past post for you....

Hope those give you some ideas...

And re-reading the above posts, things DO change frequently. Some of the items we listed are not around anymore.

And, boy, did Spoodles win me back! I ended up there one night as nothing else had space, and the server, who was a local and obviously a career server, did a fantastic job of making recommendations. I sought out the manager after my meal to tell her how he had won me over as a customer. A repeat visit a few weeks later was not as good, as that server made no effort, and the menu had changed.

The dip platter is a staple though, and amazing!

Just a note on the "things do change frequently" ~~ While items on the menu itself may change, the kitchen has MANY items stocked (or they can easily get them). Just because something isn't on the menu doesn't mean the chef can't prepare it for you. This is why it is important to have "vegan" noted on your PS or talk to the chef. The chefs can, and almost always will, prepare your meal according to your diet specifications.

As for the book being out-dated....Yes, of course things change before a book is even published, but overall the book is very helpful and gives you a very good idea where the best places are to find veg/vegan items. For the most part, at all of the restaurants we visited, if something was removed from the menu it was replaced with at least one new veg offering.

What about Mexico, are their beans vegetarian, or do they use lard? We love Mexican food, but we are vegetarians (not vegans, we use eggs and milk), so I wasn't sure if the beans were OK to eat in the Mexico restuarant.
Thanks,
DJ

We ate at Spoodles in Jan. and I had mushroom gnocchi, which was good. I'm not sure if it qualifies as vegan, but it was good. Also, years ago, I had stirfry with tofu at the restaurant at CBR and it was great.

I was told that the beans at Mexico in the sit down restaurant are without lard. I don't recall them in my meal, but I do remember being pleasantly surprised with the veggie entree as I rarely eat Mexican food. Note that you do need to ask for the seperate veggie menu card there.

Re the menus changed - I just pointed that out since sometimes people are disappointed. I recall someone asking me what the veggie entree was at CG after I had a great meal there in September, and when that poster called in October she was disappointed to find that the risotto I had was not on the menu. CG menu changes very frequently.

If I don't see what I like, I ask what they can do....

I have had excellent grilled veggie sandwiches (just seasoned grilled veggies & hummus on flatbread) at Tusker House in AK and Starring Rolls at MGM.

We bought the Vegetarian's Guide to Dining in Walt Disney World's newest edition. Off hand I think the best vegan meal would be at Jiko. Certainly there are other places to accomodate -- whether they always have a vegan option or you have to call ahead regarding a special dietary request. This book highlights these eatery attributes -- It is our bible to eating in Disney!

I agree about Jiko - I liked it better than Boma.

When I arrived, the chef had prepared a seperate menu listing all the options for a veggie meal - I mean a printed menu. There were about 3 appies and 3 entrees to choose from!

Chefs de France (ask for the manager as there are sometimes language barriers)

Hee hee, no problem there...I speak French! Of course, having said that, the French are always ASTOUNDED that a person would not eat meat or cheese! To them, that is culturally unacceptable! ;)

Well, I took french all the way through university, and live in a bilingual country.

Pas de fromage was not understood, even in my best non-Quebec accent! But then, I have had American servers who offer me chicken as a veggie meal, so it's not a French thing, me thinks! :goodvibes

My Wife had the Grilled Portobello and Sweet Potato Stack at Le Cellier in December and she really enjoyed it.

If you ever wanted to go to Whispering Canyon but thought you couldn't...

My DH (Vegetarian, not Vegan) had a interesting dish that was new (not on AllEars) and appears to be Vegan as well. He really enjoyed it and my DD enjoyed her Birthday dinner. Of course he did have to suffer though me eating the skillet of burned flesh in front of him! :teeth: I tend to over compensate when we go out.

Cousin Al's Vegetarian Dish Cannellini Bean Stew, Oven-dried Tomatoes, Roasted Butternut Squash, Baby Spinach with Garlic, topped with a nest of Yukon Gold Potatoes, and Honey Basil ginger Oil 16.99

He also enjoyed Jiko and Boma.
