My 12 year old son is interested in the Discovery Scuba at Vero. We need some information on this. Is he old enough to go on his own, what's involved, and where do they scuba? He has no prior experience. Thanks for any input!!

I can't answer your whole question but may be able to help a little with what the Discover Scuba program is.

The minimum age for this PADI program is 10 years old. Any diver under the age of 15 has to be with an adult when diving. Not sure if the divemaster would want to take the responsibility since he/she will have others to look after since this program is strictly for novice divers. When most cruise ships run this program they make it pretty clear that anyone under 15 has to be with a parent/guardian. Not sure about local dive shops.

It doesn't take very long to complete. The divemaster usually begins with an explanation of the equipment and some important safetyreminders, then it's into the water. They will not go deeper than 40' and will probably stay at around 25' for most of the dive. It will take place fairly close to shore.

You should really do it with him and may have to anyway. Make sure they give you a card showing that he/you have completed the program as that will count as your first dive should either of you ever want to become certified.

Diving is a lot of fun. Just think how much fun going into the Living Seas would be and waving at the land bound folks on the dry side of the glass!

Thanks for the info! DH is more than happy to join my son in this adventure. I'm a little claustrophobic.

That's great. MY DS and I started diving by doing the discover scuba program and we are both now "Open Water" certified. To do it once really gets you hooked. Have fun.

How can I get info on this Discovery Scuba program @ Vero?

We will be there 6/8-6/13 and it sounds like a great thing for DS & DH.

I'm leaving for Vero tomorrow, I'll post info on scuba when I return on 6/03.

side thought: is it true that you can't dive and fly with certain hours of each other?

Yes, it is true that you need to be cautious about diving and flying. However, if you're taking a class, you'll learn to use dive tables (or a dive computer) to help figure when you've decompressed enough to be safe to fly.:thumbsup2

I've just returned from Vero and it was absolutely beautiful. The weather was perfect. Unfortunately, the lady responsible for the diving lesson was on vacation this past week, so we were unable to participate in this activity. We were informed the diving lesson takes place in the swimming pool and that's as much info as I was given. There was so much to do at the resort, but the best part was doing absolutely NOTHING!!! :thumbsup2

Thanks for the info, ddiva. We leave for VB this Friday (6/8) and I will check into it when we get there to see if it is possible for DS & DH.

I'll post something when we get back to let anyone else interested know the details.

Marianne teaches the Scuba Experience in the pool at VB. DH & DS had their time this past Tuesday and loved it. There are limitations to the experience but it whetted their appetite for more. I think they are going to look into lessons at one of our area lakes.

She also teaches the SnorkelEars for kids 7-12. I thought it would be some very childish thing, geared more for the little ones. The kids get to keep their mask & snorkel and the quality of the equipment is surprisingly good. DD, 9, did this and loved it.
