Vandenberg AFB, Lompoc CA??????

Hi Everyone out there.....Another Disneyite suggested that I post this question here...so here goes.
My DD and her hubby are AF over in England. After 5 years there they've been reassigned to Vandenberg. They'll arrive here in Texas on 9/30, will buy a used van and drive to CA. They have 5 children under 10. They are going to really miss England and the friends they made there, but are excited to be back stateside. They have been assigned a sponsor, but unfortunately have not heard back from them. They are looking for any insight someone can give them about the area. They have heard there are no base schools, so she is concerned also with the starting date and the school calendars.
Is there anyone out there that can share some information about the base or that area? We did get some sites to look up from another Disneyite....and it was so wonderful to read what we could.

I don't recall ever visiting Lompoc proper, but I've been through Buellton many times (where the turnoff for Lompoc from the 101 fwy is located) and all I can say is it's HOT. In the summer, it's blazing in Buellton, so I would expect much the same from Lompoc. It's not all that far down to Santa Barbara, though, so that's a plus - don't know how long it would take to get there... maybe an hour or so??? To be honest, I wouldn't personally want to move to Lompoc, just based on the area around it, but who knows? It could turn out to be a very lovely little city.

I grew up in Ventura County which is close to Lompoc. In the past they have been famous for their flower festival. I haven't been there since the 80"s, but it was a farily nice place and close to much nicer places up and down the coast.
