I'm thinking about going to Vancouver for a few nights this October or November. The main purpose of this trip will be to catch a couple of Vancouver Canucks hockey games so I can see my beloved Trevor Linden (my namesake) play hockey. I hear that Vancouver is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and I'm sure there is a lot more to see than my beloved Canucks and Trevor Linden. Any recommendations of what I shouldn't miss?

Also, does any one know if there are any bad areas of town that I should avoid staying in? I'm thinking about staying at the Hampton Inn on Robson St. because it's close to the hockey arena.

How difficult is it to get around Vancouver? Can I get away without a car?

Has anyone ever taken a train to Whistler for a day trip? I was reading about it in a tour guide, and it sounds pretty cool. I thought it would be fun to go there and do some snowshoeing if the weather is right.

Thanks for your help.

Karen

I'm going there at the end of my Alaskan cruise. I remember reading in one of the guides that they have an excellent bus system so I bet you could get around without a car.

I really haven't done as much research on it as I normally do as I've been focused on Alaska. We're staying at a timeshare in the downtown area as well-- on Hornby.

Here are a couple of sites...

Its been many years since Ive lived in Vancouver ( richmond actually)

BUT the bus system is great..

dont miss Stanley Park!!! That was my favourite place as a child! ( great for adults too!)

and Chinatown is really cool too.

I dont know what parts you should avoid but I will ask my SIL when I talk to her later and get back to you I know there are some lol.

Have a blast and say hi to Trevor for me :)

Karen,

You should post this on the Canadian Board as well. I know there are some DISers from BC. I asked them about a year ago for advice, and they were nothing but super helpful.

DH and I were in Vancouver lo so many years ago, so I am not much help at all, but it is a GORGEOUS city, and if I remember correctly, we got to the hotel, parked the car, and walked everywhere for 2 days.

Have a great trip!

Debbie

Thanks for the responses.

DonnaS: Thanks for the great links. I've bookmarked them, and will probably be spending a lot of time looking at them.

Binny: Sure I'll say hi for Trevor for you. Can I give him a big kiss for you too?

Debster: Great idea to post this on the Canadian board. Never thought of that.

well of course you can kiss him... ;)

Im not guaranteeing he will remember me... tell him its from the sock girl from Spokane. He *might* remember that lol.

Theres an Ikea in Richmond too you can enjoy that for me too. And go visit the Penguins at the Stanley Park zoo , that was always my favourite! :) go figure. lol

Binny: I thought you were the one who said that you knew him when he was in juniors when he was a teenager, but I wasn't sure. The sock girl from Spokane? That sounds like something memorable.

Too bad I probably wouldn't get close enough to give him a big kiss and ask him if he remembered the sock girl from Spokane. I'll just settle for watching him play.

Karen

yep that was me, but like I said I didnt know him all that well since he didnt play for us. I think he might remember me, but I would probably have to be right in front of him lol.

He would probably remember the sock girl though... most of them remember that ;)

Do I dare ask how you came to be the sock girl? Should I be afraid?

Karen

not nearly as bad as it sounds... ;)

One of my MANY jobs for the cheifs was helping the trainers around the locker room.. one of the jobs included helping to patch the socks after every game. Talk about a tedious job.

The visiting teams would always say things like " Coach, we dont have girls fixing our socks, why dont we have girls??" so we ( my friend and I ) I became known throughout the league as the "sock Girls"

Your right. The stories that I was coming up with in my head were a lot more interesting than the truth. I hoped that they at least washed the socks before you had to patch them.
