For those flying into Vancouver from outside Canada, a quick rundown of our experience last night/this morning.
Our flight was meant to land at 11:22pm on the 18th (Honolulu - Vancouver), but due to the inbound flight being late we were also late.
Customs was OK - we were directed to one line and once we got to the agent he sent us to another. We are US citizens and Canadian permanent residents and despite how common that is we get bounced a lot at customs, so this wasn’t totally unusual for us. Annoying, but not unusual.
Because we landed after midnight the luggage took a full hour to hit the baggage carousel.
Kiddo had to do arrival Covid testing and husband was randomly selected. The first line was to register - this was a 45 minute line and cannot be skipped. Only 5 of the people in line were under 12 - meaning they were randomly selecting A LOT of adults for testing which made the wait times long. Flights from the US and other countries were mixed - despite the fact that testing requirements are supposed to be different for US flights. Mostly again this meant those randomly selected coming in from the US got stuck in the long lines with the flights with mandated testing for everyone. Big giant sigh.
After the registration line came the testing line. That was another 15 minutes - doubled because despite having their passports in his hand, the kid who did their registration misspelled their names on their requisition forms. Sigh. All for a cheek and lower nostril swab just like the take home tests in school. We were told the results would be emailed to us in 48 hours.
We were given no information about the day 8 follow up test for kiddo. The handout we received mentions follow up testing - “see separate handout for information”. There is no separate handout.
All told, landing at midnight we got though baggage and testing at 2am. Asleep at the Fairmont by 3am and now waiting for our final flight to Toronto!
