Hi, everyone. I'm booking a surprise trip for my parents (a Christmas present). Since I am already heading to WDW myself next year, I need to keep their trip as affordable as possible. I'm going to book them at a value resort. I did this several years ago, and sent them to All Star Music. Should I book it there again, or go for some other theme. What are your suggestions for two 50+ adults for four nights? The POP Century looks interesting, but will they enjoy it? Any comments would be helpful.

Thanks in advance. :flower1:

I would say the BEST value is All-Star Movies...

This, the newest of the All Star properties has some of the best theming around, but what really sets it apart is the food court. It's bigger and brighter than its All Star counterparts, and as such, makes for a more pleasant and efficient dining experience.

I would suggest Pop Century. With all the words on the buildings they might get a kick out of it. It is also the newest resort. Very close to MGM, Epcot, MK.

While I really like ASMO, I would agree with safetymom and say for 2 50+ adults, Pop Century would probably be really fun for them. I enjoyed checking out the resort(we didnt stay there) and Ive only been around since the 70s.

Of all the value resorts, I like Pop Century the best. Where will you be staying?

We have stayed at Movies, Music and POP and I think I would pick POP because it's the newest of them all and the decor in the rooms is so much nicer than at the All Stars IMO.

Here is what we liked about our first stay at a Value last week.

We stayed at Pop Century in the 50's building. I'd been nervous because of the talk on these boards of noise, but I didn't hear anything except for shower sounds which I also heard at the Poly and CR. When you have hundreds of showers that could all be on at once, you'll hear shower sounds...it's just a fact of being in a smaller hotel room. But they were not bothersome at all. I did not hear people talking or walking around. My BF did, but he said it was not enough so to bother him.

The place is bright and cheery. I liked it a lot. The icons are cool to look at. Some people think they are tacky, but to each their own. For instance, I think the GF looks kind of boring (flame suit on) and prefer the cheery icon statues. (Whenever I'm in the GF I feel like I'm being watched because I might break something...you know, like the feeling you'd get at, say, your older great aunts house who collects fragile collectors plates and never liked when the kids were in her living room...)

But many people enjoy the classy look of the GF and Poly and detest the icons.

It's really a matter of individual taste.

We were in the 50's wing which is very close to the pool, front building and busses. We never had more than a 5 minute walk to the busses, and found that they ran frequently. I liked the food court and the shop.

The front desk people were very helpful when we left a package at the Epcot package pick up and got back to PC before we realized it.

Getting to and from the parks and downtown was never a very long trip. Pop Century seems to be in a good location so you aren't very far away from anything.

The rooms were smallish, but the beds were comfortable, the showers were great and we felt that we had enough space for the two of us.

My only gripe was that we'd requested a King bed and did not get one. My BF is very tall and had to sleep with his feet dangling off the edge. But we checked in late at night so maybe if we had checked in at a more normal time, the front desk may have been more accomodating. The woman who checked us in at 1 am was rather surly and grumpy but she was the only grumpy CM we saw during our entire stay.

The lobby has interesting displays and it's got a nice lake in the back that was very pretty. Our room faced the lake.

I'd highly recommend Pop Century. We will most likely be staying there again sometime in 2005.

I went twice in 03, staying at both Movies and Sports. Although movies was great, I preferred Sports, if only because it is the first All Star resort to get dropped off (get off the crowded bus earlier) and the first to pick up for the parks (get a seat easier). To some, this might be meaningless, but it was nice getting off that bus earlier on those late Downtown Disney nights.
:D

Definitely POP for all the above reasons. The LAke makes such a differnce and they might enjoy some of the icons if they were kids or teens in the 50's especially. I would book POP and requests 50's buidling Lake view, NOT a first floor, if possible.

Read a long post on another site about little worms at a POP 1st fl room. The folks found hundrends of them in the suitaceses when they returned home. Several posts followed about the same little worms found in their POP room - always first floor. One of those things, I guess.

We'll be at POP on Thursday and looking forward to another fun stay.

EsmeraldaX, how were the Christmas decorations at POP?

Thanks for the report!

Thanks, everyone! Majority rules - I booked them at the POP Century. When they call the change the address on the ressie from mine to theirs, I'll have them request the 50's building.

Thanks again!!!

Lisa (By the way, I'm staying at the Wilderness Lodge 8/2005 - my first time.)

The Christmas decorations at Pop were nice. The only ones we really saw were out front and in the lobby. They have a lovely tree in the center of the lobby and some holly and wreaths that are lit up. Subtle but pretty. A few rooms had their own decorations which I assume they brought with them. :)

Nothing quite like the gingerbread houses at GF or anything like that, but we liked it. I'd never stayed in WDW at Christmastime before and so I was pretty much mesmerized by every decoration I saw. My first words when we entered the lobby were "We have a Christmas tree in our lobby!!!!"

Lol! I have so many pictures of random wreaths, and lights and close ups of ornaments on trees. I must have a picture of every holiday decoration in WDW!

I think I definately want to return in Dec. 2005. :)

Might I make a suggestion? Your parents will be much happier staying in the same resort in which you are staying. I speak from experience. Having family in different resorts is a real pain.

Since you're new to the DIS, you might not be aware that WDW resorts are usually discounted off rack rate by calling Central Reservation with specific codes. The codes for August are not out yet, but I would guess that you would be able to book the WL woods view for less than $130 per night. Two rooms at the WL with codes would probably be less than rack rate for the WL and POP together. If that's still too expensive, consider one of the moderate resorts and get two rooms there. Moderate resorts go for less than $100 per night with codes, for instance I paid $79 for Port Orleans French Quarter last August.

I think it's really wonderful that you are treating your parents :).

we stayed at pop twice this year..if that tells ya anything.....POP POP POP

We really enjoyed Pop during our recent visit and I will return there for a couple nights next month. It's a lively looking place and it's a lot of fun to walk the grounds.

This trip was much quieter since we were facing the lake. The only noise, besides toilets flushing was the obnoxious neighbor who propped open the door with the security lock (I know there must be a special name for that lock, but you know what I mean) and then proceeded to go in and out the door many times early in the morning, letting it bang shut each time. Of course that can happen at any resort, so that's not Pop Century's fault.

Your parents will enjoy the resort!

BaciBecky, we ended up in the 70's section, which was also a nice, short walk to the main building.
