I thought I would run this by some other people. I'm kind of hot about it...

I was at the MVMCP on Friday and having a great time. As is usual for my wife and I, as we start to exit the park we stop and buy a rice krispy treat at the shop on main street. My wife used a snack point for hers but I had none left and paid cash. I had only a couple of $100's and about $5 in the new $1 coins. Since it was a $3 item I gave the cast member 3 $1 coins. She spent probably 5 min looking at them and talking with the other girl before rejecting them saying that they only accept "American Money" I tried to explain that it was U.S. Money but it did not good. I was forced to pay with a $100. That she took without a second glance and gave me my $97 in change back.

Am I wrong that this bothered me? I mean WDW must pull in TONS of cash each day, is it asking too much that the cashiers know what is current legal U.S. money?

you mean *especially* now that Disney has a program with the US Mint to distribute $1 coins as change in Liberty Square and the American Adventure?

yes. you should have used 2 $2 instead.

It's not only ignorant, but amazing considering WDW is supposed to be pushing for use of the 1$ coin in partnership with the US mint.

( Sheesh! I'm Canadian and I know that :D ... They need to get their stuff straight )

I guess I would have looked at the money in the same way... I've never heard of any $1 coins, since those silly Sacagawea ones that everyone hated because they were too close in size to quarters and weighed too much to haul around. So there's new ones now?? :confused3

I mean bother me.

I am sure it was late and crowded and you were just trying to get out of the MK and back to your resort - but if it had been earlier in the day I would have definately called over a manager.

$1 coins never went away. the mint has been introducing an entire line of presidential coins since 2007... http://www.usmint.gov/mint_programs/$1coin/

and the 'new' coins Disney is pushing are part of a new series (with Sacagawea) honoring Native Americans. I put new in quotes because the US Mint program started nearly over 11 months ago. http://www.usmint.gov/mint_programs/nativeAmerican/

I'm not going to lie, I think this complaint is beyond silly.

$1 coins aren't common and she may geniunely have no idea it's real. To her, you could have made that coin and then why would she accept it?

Not only that, you got the $100 broken which is always a good thing in my book and it's not like you were greatly inconvienced.

Are you serious? What good does it do to have US currency that you can't use in the US? These people are in the retail business, it's their business to know US currency..

before rejecting them saying that they only accept "American Money"

:rotfl: That's pretty hilarious considering *this* is the back side of the coin:

Eh, I find it more silly than annoying, but it wasn't me late at night after a long day who just wanted my tasty rice krispie treat!! Like another poster said, at least then you had change ;)

I would have said, "ma'am, this is American money", and if she still refused, I would have her get her manager. She probably never seen the dollar coin before. I worked with a girl once at a resturant, a guest asked her for a "rum and coke", and she asked "what is in that?". Also, someone asked my co-worker for a "shirley temple", and he asked to see her ID. It isn't that they aren't bright, they just don't know.

Sorry - but her saying Disney only accepts "American Money" is what really bothers me. She makes it sound like you are trying to give her "funny money" when you are actually the one that is right.

Dare I admit, I had a somewhat similar reaction the other day when my daughter tried to give me a dollar. She handed me this quarter sized coin and told me it was a dollar. I handled it without even really looking at it and thought she was trying to pull one over on me. I finally realized (after some minor back and forth arguing) that it was really a dollar.:sad2:
I said, 'no wonder they don't make these anymore, they look just like quarters!'.
Too easily mistakenly similar if you ask me. I started to wonder how many things I might have actually overpaid for.:upsidedow:mad:

If the CM was one of the college program CMs, she was probably a tired, underpaid, undertrained, overworked young lady who was blurry-eyed and exhausted from being on her feet all day. To the OP - thank you for accepting her mistake, and paying with the $100 bill instead of making a big issue out of it.

That is why they uncommon, people refuse to take them:confused3

I could have not have said it better....I would have definitely stood my ground and asked for a manager or at least someone familiar with United States currency...

Actually, this is the reverse...

thumbReverse.jpg

It clearly says "United States of America" and "$1"...

My thinking was they actually hand them out as change in one place in the MK, the other place should know what they are. The US Mint will actually send you out a neat little poster - for free, no shipping - that shows all of the different types of U.S. money that is still considered "current". It's not like I gave her an Eisenhower dollar or something...

And I hate to point it out, but these coins are still being made, by the millions! I think it's something like 46 million of them to date, this year alone, plus all the ones from 2007 and 2008. Four presidents a year for 9 years or so...

I would have asked for a manager, or stopped by City Hall on my way out. She was wrong, and needs to be told she's wrong, for the next customer that comes along. Just because OP had a $100 bill, doesn't mean he should have had to have cashed it. I know once I cash a large bill, the money tends to just disappear. The coin is legal tender. It should be accepted. In the NY area, these coins are quite common and are given as change in transit machines.

I can't believe the people who think you shouldn't say anything. She works a cash register - she NEEDS to know that the coin is valid US currency. How many people will be told they can't use that coin until someone finally steps up and she's made aware of that fact? If she told you she couldn't accept your Visa card because she didn't recognize it, would you just find another way to pay? Telling her manager is actually doing her (and everyone else) a favor.

I had something similar happen to me at Taco Bell. I gave the girl at the register 5 of the $1 coins to pay for my meal. She stared at them for a few seconds and said “I have to ask my manager if I can accept these”. I couldn’t hear what she said to the manager but I heard him say with a confused look on his face “Why not? It’s U.S. currency”.
